The Gentleness Of Christ
BRD REFLECTION 2026
Matthew 12: 15-21 and Psalm 50:1-6 (NIV)
(Grace Chua, BeTween Ministry)
READ:
Matthew 12:15-21, paying particular attention to the following verses:
“I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations. He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear his voice in the streets. A bruised reed he will not break, and a smouldering wick he will not snuff out, till he has brought justice through to victory.” (v18b-20)
OBSERVE:
From this scripture passage, Matthew affirms that Jesus is the fulfilment of Isaiah 42:1-4. Matthew sees in Christ an obedient servant who is merciful and meek. Jesus performed healings despite great opposition from the Pharisees. He remained composed (v.19) and gentle (v.20) in the face of adversity and knew when to withdraw. God is always righteous and in control of every situation and justice will inevitably prevail.
APPLY:
There are times I encounter injustice and unwarranted persecution against others; for example, school and workplace bullying and unfair treatment. I question why such incidents happen as I bear witness to the victims’ sadness and struggles. These injustices make me feel frustrated and angry. However, I need to reflect upon my initial response. In the moment of wanting to right a wrong, do I become impulsive, brash and unkind, causing even more hurt? Do I lose sight of what God calls me to be?
This scripture passage reminds me to practice self-control when witnessing adversity. Even though the right thing to do is call out bad behaviour, I must first allow the fruit of the Spirit to take hold and thereafter, in a timely manner, approach the matter with gentleness and grace. As God has shown me so much grace and mercy in my own brokenness, I need to extend the same to everyone, regardless of the circumstances.
DO:
Through quiet acts of service, reaching out with humility and kindness powered by the Spirit, I will faithfully pray and surrender all outcomes to God because in His time, justice will prevail.
PRAY:
Heavenly Father, thank You for being my defender, shield, and restorer in times of trouble. You are our God of all comfort and that Your righteousness is our strong tower. Lord, where I have witnessed people treated unfairly, I pray for Your divine intervention and righteousness to prevail. I pray for those who have caused hurt, that their hearts be softened and be guided onto the path of righteousness.
Lord, I renounce the desire to be quick to anger and pray for a spirit of humility, patience and self-control. Replace and fill the spaces in our hurting hearts with Your peace that surpasses all understanding. Help me to trust that You are working all things together for our good and for Your glory.
In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
