OBSERVE:
Genesis 28 picks up from the consequences of Jacob stealing the firstborn blessing in chapter 27:
Jacob Flees (Gen. 27:41–46; 28:1–5): After Esau vows to kill Jacob, Rebekah schemes to save him. She convinces Isaac that Jacob must leave to find a non-Canaanite wife from her brother Laban’s family. Isaac blesses Jacob and sends him off, giving Jacob a legitimate reason to leave and escape Esau’s wrath.
Esau Seeks Approval (vv. 6–9): Before continuing with Jacob’s journey, the story switches to Esau, who realizes that his Canaanite wives displease his parents. Esau tries to win back Isaac’s favour by marrying the daughter of Ishmael.
APPLY:
As I meditated on Genesis 28:1–5, I saw spiritual parallels to my own life journey:
· Choosing spiritual purity (v. 1): Jacob was instructed not to marry a Canaanite but to seek a wife from his own people. Likewise, I must guard my heart, values, and relationships daily—choosing paths that align with my faith and mission rather than conforming to worldly values.
· Commissioned with a purpose (vv. 3–4): Isaac prayed for God to bless and commission Jacob. Likewise, God has commissioned me with a purpose and a blessing. I therefore need to seek His direction daily to fulfil His purposes step by step.
· Stepping into the unknown (v. 5): Jacob left his home, his mother, and everything familiar to him, stepping into an uncertain future across hundreds of kilometres. Jesus similarly calls me to step out of my comfort zones, securities, and self-reliance, and to walk solely by faith. · Guided by God’s grace: Jacob was not flawless; he was fleeing the consequences of his own deceit. Yet God never abandoned him and continued to accomplish His purposes through Jacob. I am deeply encouraged that God does not abandon me in my weaknesses. By His grace, God works in me to accomplish His purposes and transform me into His likeness.
DO:
Every day, I want to:
1. Choose purity through my marriage, relationships, and decisions, refusing spiritual compromise.
2. Speak blessings and encouragement by daily seeking opportunities to pray and speak encouragement and protection over my family and friends.
3. Trust God in uncertainty by praying for God’s strength and presence to flood every area of my life where I feel uncertain and out of my depth.
PRAY:
Heavenly Father, thank You that You go with me into every unknown and fearful season of my life. Guide my steps and guard my choices. Give me courage to walk in Your grace and to cling to Your promises today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
