A Special Encounter With God – Affirming His Promises & Faithfulness

OBSERVE:
The passage in Genesis 28:10–22 is a familiar one, in which Jacob dreams of a stairway or ladder resting on the earth, with its top reaching heaven, and angels of God ascending and descending on it. It also affirms God’s renewal of His covenantal promise made to Abraham and His promise to protect Jacob on his journey. The background and context are that Jacob is fleeing from his angry brother Esau and travelling to Haran. The dream occurs as a very tired Jacob uses a stone as a pillow while sleeping on the ground.
APPLY:
Jacob’s encounter with God is initiated by God. The vision or dream symbolises the divine grace, connection, and presence of God in our lives. As I reflect on this, it reminds me of God’s love, as He first reaches out to love us. He sent His one and only Son, our Lord Jesus, to come down to earth and bridge the chasm between mankind and Himself, offering us a relationship with Him and eternal life when we accept Him as our Lord and Saviour. What a wonderful God!
DO:
I will remember that God keeps His promises and will always be with me in every circumstance. Verse 15 is a great reminder when I am weak or struggling in a valley.
“I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I promised you.”
I will always focus on God and remember His promises and faithfulness in every season of my life. Just as Jacob set up a pillar with the stone and made a vow to worship God, I will have my own personal place and space to remind myself of His goodness and faithfulness, and to commune with and worship Him daily.
PRAY:
Father God, I thank You for Your Word today. You are the same yesterday, today, and forevermore. I give thanks for Your faithfulness and mercies, and for reaching out to me, loving me, and bringing me back to You. May I continue to abide in You, worship You, and honour You daily. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
