God’s Living Presence Is Our Greatest Joy

BRD REFLECTION 2026

Genesis 24:15-25 and Psalm 84:1-7 (NIV)

(Kuah Ann Nee, Strangely Warmed Retreat Committee)

READ:

Psalm 84:1-7 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

In verse 1-4 the psalmist describes vividly his great longing to be with God in God’s “lovely” dwelling place. His whole being wants to be with God (verse 2 “My soul yearns…  my heart and my flesh cry out ….”)

He continues to illustrate that it is such a blessing to be near God’s altar that little birds like sparrows and swallows feel safe to raise their young there. Verse 4 articulates the blessing and joy of worship of those who dwell in God’s house – praising God. Verse 5-7 describes the pilgrimage to Zion.

The psalmist describes the blessedness of those who draw strength from God and set their heart on the pilgrimage. For even when they encounter trials (verse 6 “…pass through Valley of Baca, ….”), they will see renewal and refreshment from rain (verse 6 “…a place of spring, the autumn rains also cover it with pools) and move from strength to strength (verse 7).

APPLY:

As I meditate on the readings, verses 6 and 7, spoke to me. I am reminded of God’s continuous presence in my life journey, in every season. When things are smooth, worshipping God is naturally full of joy and thanksgiving. During periods of struggles, spending time with God gives me opportunity to experience His faithfulness. And when I look back at the ups and downs of my journey, God often uses the times in the valley – period/periods of adversity to help to deepen my faith, to strengthen me, to humble me.

DO:

I need to be intentional about protecting my time with God, both in the form of corporate worship and meditating on His presence in my life. I need to learn to be less distracted and allow my thoughts to dwell on His presence during these times.

PRAY:

Almighty Father in heaven, a taste of communion with You truly fills my soul with joy and peace that can only come from You. Help me to live out “less doing and more being”; being with You, Almighty Father. May the trials on my way lead me closer to You and not away from You. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
