Genesis 24:1-14 and Psalm 83:9-18 (NIV)
(Dominic Lim, Youth Ministry)
READ:
Genesis 24:1-14 and Psalm 83:9-18 (NIV)
OBSERVE:
At first glance, Genesis 24 and Psalm 83, seem to be vastly different. One is a historical account, the other a song of lament.
However, I found a similar vein running through both passages: Remembrance. Abraham’s command to his servant (see Gen 24:6-8), Abraham’s servant’s prayer (see Gen 24:2-4; 9; 12), and the psalmist Asaph’s song, (see Psalm 83:9-12;16-18) are all rooted in remembering what God has done for them, their family, and their people.
Remembrance of God’s covenant shaped Abraham’s decisions. Remembrance of his oath pushed Abraham’s servant to look to God and surrender the task at hand. Remembrance of God’s faithfulness brought Asaph to lament and call out to God.
APPLY:
It is easy to forget. Even for daily routines, I forget to do the laundry, buy certain groceries, or close the windows on a rainy day. Today’s Bible passage made me realise how easily I forget what God has done in my life. In forgetting, my eyes become focused downward on myself, what I want, what I lack.
God is reminding me to learn from Abraham, his servant, and Asaph: to recall His hand in my life, to lift my eyes upwards to see Him alone. Just as that God-ward focus kept Abraham, his servant, and Asaph aligned to God’s plan, amid the task, the suffering, or the victory, God is reminding me that in remembrance, I will find strength to face suffering in this world, stay aligned to His direction, and partake in His complete victory.
DO:
WRITE – I will journal and recall everything I witnessed about what God has done in my life.
MEDITATE – I will ponder upon the many biblical promises written in Scripture.
SPEAK – In prayer, I will move from self-centred prayers focused on my needs to God-centred prayers focused on His greatness.
PRAY:
Dearest Lord,
I thank You. You have been faithful, and my life is a tapestry of all that You have done.
I pray, O Lord, that Your Spirit will help me to remember all that You have done. In remembrance, may my eyes be ever focused on You, beholding Your glory. In remembrance, may my heart find Your shalom peace in the midst of challenges and suffering. In remembrance, may I be faithful to Your kingdom work till the end.
Thank You Lord, may all the glory and praise be given unto You alone. Amen.
