BRD REFLECTION 2026

Genesis 24:42-51 and Psalms 85:1-7 (NIV)

(Estella Lau, Discipleship and Nurture Committee)

READ:

Genesis 24:42-51 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

Abraham’s servant was tasked to look for a wife for Isaac from Abraham’s clan in Aram Naharaim. When he met Laban and Bethuel, he recounted his prayer to God for success in his mission. He had asked for a sign – that the right woman would offer water to him and his camels. Rebekah fulfilled this sign exactly, showing kindness and generosity. The servant explained how this confirmed God’s guidance that had led him to her family, and asked Laban and Bethuel for their consent. Both men recognised that the matter came from God, so they allowed Rebekah to go with the servant and become Isaac’s wife.

APPLY:

What stood out to me in this passage was how intimately the servant knew God. He had complete trust that God would grant him success in his mission, and he was willing to step out in faith and to embark on what seemed like a “mission impossible,” which involved a long and arduous journey from Canaan to Aram Naharaim. He understood God’s desire to find a virtuous woman for Isaac – one of strong character, compassionate and diligent (it was no small task to water 10 camels, each capable of drinking hundreds of litres!). He girded his mission with prayer, worship, and thanksgiving. When it was fulfilled, he readily shared his testimony of God’s faithfulness and divine guidance.

DO:

God wants His people to trust Him, to go forth in obedience to be a blessing to all. When God calls, I should choose to obey and surrender to Him every step of the way, rather than making excuses to avoid His mission. By doing so, I will avail myself to the fullness of life Jesus has promised. Indeed, the fulfilment of God’s promise to Abraham hinged on the faith and obedience of all involved – Abraham, his servant, Laban, Bethuel, and Rebekah. Blessing comes from trust and obedience.

PRAY:

Dear Lord, teach me to trust You completely, even when the path ahead feels uncertain or overwhelming. Give me courage to step out in faith when You call, instead of hesitating or making excuses. Help me to walk closely with You in prayer, to seek You in every decision, and to recognise Your hand at work in my life. Form in me a willing and obedient spirit, ready to surrender each step to You. May my actions reflect Your character, and may my life become a testimony of Your faithfulness and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
