Genesis 13 and Psalm 77:13-20 (NIV)
OBSERVE:
In Genesis 12, Abram’s plan to protect himself by asking Sarai to present herself as his sister failed. Yet through God’s gracious intervention, Abram, Sarai, Lot, and their household returned safely from Egypt (vv1–4). Rather than abandoning Abram because of his failure, God graciously restored him. Abram returned to the altar between Bethel and Ai, where he called on the name of the Lord, renewing his worship and dependence on God.
As Abram’s and Lot’s possessions increased, strife arose between their herdsmen (v7). Abram graciously allowed Lot to choose the land first, trusting God’s promise rather than securing the best for himself. Lot “lifted up his eyes” and chose the fertile plain of the Jordan because it appeared prosperous (vv10–11). After Lot departed, God told Abram to “lift up your eyes” and reaffirmed His covenant, promising that all the land Abram could see would belong to him and his descendants (vv14–18). While Lot chose by sight, Abram learned to walk by faith, trusting God’s promise over outward appearances.
Similarly, in Psalm 77:13–20, Asaph was overwhelmed by present troubles. Although his circumstances had not changed, his perspective did as he remembered God’s mighty deeds and His faithful guidance of Israel through Moses and Aaron.
APPLY:
By God’s grace, I am now a child of God through faith in Jesus Christ. Because I belong to Christ, I am also Abraham’s offspring and an heir according to God’s promise (Galatians 3:26–29). The God who restored Abram after his failure, faithfully led His people, and fulfilled His promises through Christ is the same faithful God who walks with me today.
Like Abram and Asaph, I must not allow fear or circumstances to shape my perspective. Instead, I am called to remember God’s faithfulness, trust His promises, and walk by faith rather than by sight. His grace is greater than my failures, and His promises remain certain even when I cannot yet see their fulfilment.
DO:
When I feel discouraged or anxious, I will intentionally remember God’s faithfulness by recalling His work in my life and meditating on His Word. Above all, I will hold fast to His promise that nothing—not trouble, hardship, uncertainty, nor even death—can separate me from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus my Lord (Romans 8:38–39). Because His love for me is secure, I can trust Him with confidence, rest in His unfailing promises, and choose each day to walk by faith rather than by sight.
PRAY:
Father God, thank You for Your unfailing faithfulness and amazing grace. Thank You for restoring me through Christ and making me Your child. Help me, like Abram, to trust Your promises rather than what I can see, and like Asaph, to remember Your faithfulness in every season. Through Your Spirit, strengthen me to walk by faith and not by sight, keeping my eyes fixed on Jesus and resting securely in Your unchanging love. In His precious name I pray, Amen.
