As Singapore celebrates her 61st birthday, our hearts are filled with gratitude for the nation we call home. In every milestone, we are reminded that peace, safety and progress are God’s gifts that cannot be taken for granted. Yet our call as believers goes deeper than national pride. Standing as one community, bound by an unshakable unity across every race, background and shore, we are called to extend His compassion to all who share this island with us.
Wesley member Dr Michael Chiam reflects on Singapore’s 61st National Day with gratitude for God’s faithfulness and the privilege of contributing to the nation. Through his journey as an educator, he encourages Singaporeans to recognise their unique contributions and continue shining Christ’s light in everyday life.
This year, Singapore celebrates its 61st National Day.
What does it mean to celebrate National Day? It is a time to give thanks for our nation’s independence and to reflect on the remarkable journey that has brought us from 1965 to where we are today.
When we look back, we can truly say that Singapore has come a long way. This journey was made possible not only by political leaders or business leaders but also by ordinary Singaporeans from all walks of life. Every citizen has played a part in building our nation.
Each of us has contributed in our own way — through our work, families, communities and the lives we have touched. No contribution is too small when it is offered with love, commitment and a desire to make a difference.
As I reflect on my own journey as an educator, having retired not too long ago, I feel deeply grateful for the privilege of serving in the education sector for more than three decades.
Over the years, I have watched many of my former students grow into capable adults. They have built meaningful careers, started families and contributed to our nation in countless ways. Many have become good friends and some have even joined me in retirement.
Whenever we gather and reminisce about the years we spent together, my heart is filled with gratitude.
It is humbling to know that, by God’s will and grace, I was able to play a small part in my students’ learning journey and in shaping their lives.
Seeing them flourish brings me great joy. I know that whatever good I have been able to do has only been possible because of God’s grace. To Him be all the glory.
My story is not unique.
I believe each one of us has a story to tell. Along life’s journey, we have all touched lives and in one way or another made a difference to the people around us. These individual stories together form part of Singapore’s story.
As we celebrate our nation’s 61st birthday, perhaps this is a good opportunity to pause and reflect on how we have each contributed to our country.
It is also a fitting time to pray for Singapore, to thank God for His faithfulness over the years and to thank Him for the privilege of playing our part, however small, in building this nation.
As Christians, may we continue to shine the light of Christ wherever He has placed us — to bring warmth to weary hearts, encouragement to those who are discouraged, hope to those in need and comfort to those who are hurting.
This reminds me of the simple Sunday School song many of us grew up singing:
“This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.”
May we continue to let the light of Jesus shine brightly this National Day and for many National Days to come.
