BRD REFLECTION 2026

Genesis 12 and Psalm 76 (NIV)

(Ade Olopade from Small Group Ministry)

READ:

Psalm 76 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

From verses one to twelve, Psalm 76 reflects themes of a great and mighty God (vv 1, 4), an ever-present and in-dwelling God, His authority over the affairs of man, deliverance from enemies (vv 5-6), place of judgment (vv 8-9), and God’s desire for a humble heart (vv 10,12). In twelve verses, Psalm 76  makes a case that God is awesome, worthy of reverence, and the only One to be worshiped (v7).

APPLY:

Of all these themes, it was God’s desire for a humble heart that struck me most personally. The realisation hit like a ton of bricks – “Human defiance only enhances Your glory, for You use it as a weapon” (v10). By nature, I am defiant, prideful, and hard of heart. I tend to feel that I know what is good for me, and no one else can or should tell me how to live my life. Inadvertently, I try to exalt my desires above God’s, and in turn do as I please. In this verse, I realise that I am not that different from Pharaoh, who exalted himself and would not let God’s people go, or Nebuchadnezzar, who walked on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon declaring his “mighty power and the glory of his majesty”. The Holy Spirit is calling me to surrender my prideful heart and to stop warring against God or His Spirit that works in me.

God only wants the best for me, and His love is available to me through His Son and Spirit.

DO:

I will seek God’s help to transform my heart, to help me surrender to Him wholeheartedly, and to leave behind no prideful keepsakes or trophies.

PRAY:

Lord Jesus, I thank You for Your Spirit that convicts the heart. I come into Your presence today seeking Your forgiveness and healing for a prideful heart that has defied You. I am grateful that through this verse, I can reflect on my failings and heed Your warning. Help me, O Lord, to know that pride goes before a fall, and a haughty spirit before destruction. I pray that You create in me a renewed heart that seeks to exalt You alone. By Your Spirit, instil in me the Holy fear to walk freely in this truth through Christ Jesus. Amen.
