Resting In God
BRD REFLECTION 2026
Matthew 11:20-30 and Psalm 49:10-15 (NIV)
(Andrew Tong from Small Group Ministry)
READ:
Matthew 11:20-30 (NIV)
OBSERVE:
In the first few verses of this passage, Jesus denounces the towns of Chorazin and Bethsaida and also Capernaum. They did not repent even though they were witnesses to the many miracles performed there. Bethsaida is also where Jesus fed the five thousand (Luke 9:10) and is the birthplace of the disciples Philip, Andrew and Peter (John 1:44). I keep imagining how the people in Bethsaida (and Chorazin) must have been excited to see the miracles performed by Jesus, yet they did not repent. The hearts of the people were hardened.
In the last three verses, Jesus promises rest for the souls of the weary and proclaims that His yoke is easy and His burden light.
APPLY:
It makes me wonder what it takes to change my heart: I think of all the things that God has done in my life; I hear of all the testimonies of God’s goodness from small group members and fellow believers; I read many stories of God’s greatness. Yet, more often than not, I find my heart turning not to God but to my own abilities, to temporal and material things. This is the life that I live in our little busy red dot and it gets tiring and tiresome. God is calling for me to put my trust in Him and to find rest for my soul. What does trusting God mean? I do believe it is not just an intellectual understanding but a daily choice to rest in Him, to rest in His Word and His promises.
DO:
I must make it a rule in my life to start and end the day resting in God by reading His Word and just conversing with the Father.
PRAY:
Father, I commit to starting each day in Your presence. Forgive me if I fail and pick me up and let me go again.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
