Lest I Forget
BRD REFLECTION 2026
Matthew 15:29-39 and Psalm 61 (NIV)
(Gerald Lim, Small Group Ministry)
READ:
My reflections today are from Matthew 15:29–39.
OBSERVE:
In this familiar passage, Jesus performed yet another miracle by multiplying seven loaves and a few small fish so that they were sufficient not only to feed 4,000 people, but also to leave seven baskets of leftovers. What a privilege it must have been for the disciples to witness and participate in a miracle of this scale.
This account taught me about Jesus’ compassion, His power to multiply the little we offer into His abundant supply, and how He is the Bread of Life who sustains us spiritually.
Yet what struck me most in this passage was the disciples’ weak faith. In Matthew 14:13–21, we read that they were an integral part of Jesus’ earlier miracle of feeding 5,000 people with just five loaves and two fish. Yet in this nearly identical situation, they still doubted His ability to supply what the crowds needed.
Despite having seen Jesus’ power at work up close, they still forgot what they had witnessed earlier when faced with challenging circumstances. This forgetfulness highlights a truth about our fallen nature—we often struggle to remember and trust God’s provision even after experiencing it firsthand.
APPLY:
Deuteronomy 4:9a is a warning to me:
9 Only be careful and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live.
Spiritual amnesia is real. When new challenges or crises arise, I often respond with doubt, as if God has not already proven His faithfulness. I forget the “loaves of bread and fish” He has multiplied in my own journey – the times He provided when I had little or carried me when I was weary.
My prayer is that I will always turn to Him in every circumstance, offering whatever little oil I may have in my lamp.
DO:
I will:
• Cultivate a rhythm of regular prayer and thanksgiving to be reminded of His faithfulness.
• Regularly reflect on His blessings in my life to strengthen my spiritual “muscle memory” to always seek Him first.
• Be thankful for His patience even as I often lapse into forgetfulness only to be reminded of His past mercies and providence.
PRAY:
Thank You, Lord, for Your patience with me. I confess the many times that I forget the love and mercy You have shown me in my walk with You. May the words of this hymn fill my heart lest I forget:
“Great is Thy faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see:
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided—
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!”
In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
