In Conversation with D&N Leaders: Your Guide to Wesley’s Discipleship Courses

Discipleship is a lifelong journey of walking closely with Jesus. At Wesley Methodist Church, our diverse Discipleship & Nurture ministries are designed to anchor you deeply in God’s Word and equip you for faithful daily living. Whether you are seeking foundational truths or deeper theological study, there is a place for you as we give thanks for God’s transforming grace in every generation of our church family.

As we gather for our annual Discipleship & Nurture (D&N) Weekend this November, we are reminded that following Jesus is not a sprint but a lifelong, transformative journey. From the moment we attend our first membership class to decades of deep Scripture study and community service, God is continually shaping us into His likeness.

This year, we celebrate how our diverse D&N ministries have served as spiritual anchors for our congregation, equipping minds, warming hearts and sending hands out into the world. Whether you are seeking a foundational grasp of the faith, a quiet space for spiritual discernment or a community to walk alongside you in every season of life, our ministries are here to journey with you.

Dive into this special D&N feature to explore the paths God has laid out for your growth and discover how our dedicated sub-ministry leaders are helping our church family grow in discipleship through various courses and pathways.

ESTELLA LAU (D&N Chairperson)
WT: How has the D&N ministry evolved to meet the spiritual needs of our congregation?

Estella: Our key mission is to equip individuals in their lifelong journey of faith and enable them to develop their God-given gifts for service in God’s Kingdom.

We provide a wide range of Christian resources catering to all stages of spiritual maturity, including lay training courses, in-depth Bible studies, spiritual formation courses, retreats and contemporary workshops. While our 10 sub-ministries offer different programmes, we are united by Vision 2035’s strategic thrust: “Make disciples of all generations, young and old, through the centrality of God’s Word and the transforming power of the Spirit.”

From the practical tools offered by BookNook and the Bible Reading Drive to teaching ministries like the Core Series, DISCIPLE and Precept, these ministries form seamless pathways that help people encounter God’s Word, live out their faith in community and disciple others.

KATHLEEN JONG (BookNook)
Discipleship doesn’t stop when a class ends; it continues at home. Wesley BookNook is carefully curated to nourish the heart and mind long after Sunday service, offering inspiring devotionals, commentaries and children’s books.

WT: How long have you served in this ministry?

Kathleen: 16 years.

WT: How does BookNook intentionally support and extend discipleship beyond the classroom?

Kathleen: BookNook equips members for personal reflection and deeper theological understanding at home. Through thoughtfully chosen gifts and resources, faith becomes something tangible to share with others.

WT: Could you share a heartwarming moment where a book nurtured a member’s walk with God?

Kathleen: On Mother’s Day, a 10-year-old boy came into BookNook to buy a gift for his mother, who was recovering in hospital. Guided by a volunteer, he chose the book 21st Century Mother-in-Law. Weeks later, his mother shared that it was a divine assurance from God regarding her future. It’s a sweet reminder that the Lord uses everyday moments to plant His Word and gently nurture faith.

POON MENG YIN (Bible Reading Drive)
The Bible Reading Drive (BRD) encourages the Wesley community to engage daily with God’s Word together, fostering personal growth and cultivating a vibrant culture rooted in truth.

WT: What has been the most encouraging feedback from a BRD participant?

Meng Yin: One gentleman not only reads BRD each morning but also forwards it to his friends and grandchildren, believing it will bless their lives just as it has blessed his.

WT: How can church members stay consistently engaged with BRD?

Meng Yin: As we celebrate 10 years of BRD, remember to stay anchored in the Bible itself, not just in the devotional reflections. Be sure to read the actual text every day.

DR LEOW THENG HUAT (Core Series)
Grounding the Christian faith in sound doctrine is vital for navigating a complex world. The Core Series offers engaging and accessible classes that unpack fundamental Christian beliefs and practical Christian living. Designed for every believer, these courses bridge the gap between theological truth and everyday choices. Strengthen your biblical foundation, clarify your questions and gain practical wisdom for daily discipleship.

WT: Why are the Core Series classes essential for grounding believers in sound doctrine and practical Christian living?

Dr Leow: The Core Series modules seek to help Christians develop a holistic understanding of the Christian faith and participate in the rhythm of the Christian life. They fall under three categories: Basic Christian Beliefs, The Christian Life and History of Christianity.

WT: How have you seen these courses practically help members navigate daily life challenges through a biblical lens? Can you share an example?

Dr Leow: Core Series courses help members connect biblical truth with everyday living. Participants learn how God speaks into real-life challenges such as relationships, work pressures, family responsibilities, suffering, decision-making and spiritual struggles.

Through courses on church history, doctrine and spiritual formation, members gain a clearer understanding of God’s character, His purposes and His guidance for life. They are also equipped to engage thoughtfully with contemporary issues from a Christian perspective.

Our lecturers often conclude each session with a Q&A segment and interact with participants. From their questions and comments, we see how they are engaging with what they have learnt. We hope this learning helps them navigate life situations and foster growth in their spiritual journey.

JOLINE TANG (Creation Care)
Caring for the earth is an act of worship and a fundamental expression of our love for the Creator. The Creation Care ministry helps us connect environmental stewardship directly to our spiritual formation. Through practical workshops, advocacy and community action, we learn how to live more gently on the planet.

WT: How does caring for God’s creation deeply connect with our spiritual formation and discipleship journey at Wesley?

Joline: You will appreciate how amazing our Creator is when you slow down and observe the intricate details, symbiotic relationships and beauty of nature, all created by our powerful God. It also reminds us that loving our neighbour extends beyond people to include animals and the natural world.

WT: What is one simple way our church members can practise faithful stewardship of the earth?

Joline: Being mindful of how our actions affect other people, animals and the environment. I often ask myself questions such as: Do I consume material goods excessively? Do I know who makes the products I buy? Am I stewarding God’s resources faithfully and responsibly?

These questions help us become more intentional with the resources God has entrusted to us.

JAMES TAN (Companions in Christ)
Faith without contemplation and a deeper understanding of the mind, heart and hands of Christ is incomplete. Companions in Christ (CIC) is a 28-session journey that explores five areas: Christian journey, Scripture, prayer, call and spiritual guidance.

WT: How does CIC bridge biblical learning with active reflection in the community?

James: Our ministry moves through three steps: biblical grounding gives people the Word, contemplative practices help them slow down and listen, and self-reflection moves that inward rest outward into radical availability for service in the community.

WT: Please share a personal reflection with us on your CIC journey.

James: Before joining CIC in 2018, I relied on my own strength and mostly head knowledge. CIC showed me that being with God matters more than constantly doing for Him, transforming my walk ever since.

GOH KHEAN CHYE (DISCIPLE / Christian Believer)
Are you ready for a transformative encounter with Scripture? DISCIPLE and Christian Believer offer an intensive and immersive journey through the Word of God over several months. Through disciplined daily reading, small-group sharing and mutual accountability, the Bible comes alive in fresh and life-changing ways.

WT: How does committing to DISCIPLE reshape a member’s daily walk?

Khean Chye: DISCIPLE is a four-part journey that integrates Scripture into our daily rhythm. We learn not just to understand God’s Word but to live it out. Christian Believer then deepens our understanding of core doctrines.

WT: What encouragement would you offer someone intimidated by the commitment?

Khean Chye: Don’t be intimidated by the length. Just take the next step. Begin with DISCIPLE 1, one week at a time. You don’t need to be an expert; simply bring an open heart and learn alongside others.

RICHARD THONG (Precept)
Discover what God is saying for yourself through the power of inductive Bible study. Precept courses teach participants how to observe, interpret and apply Scripture accurately, verse by verse.

WT: How does the Precept inductive Bible study method empower members to discover God’s truth for themselves?

Richard: We always begin our Precept study with prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to guide us as we read God’s Word. We study the Bible verse by verse, carefully observing key words, phrases, people, places, timing and circumstances in the text.

Instead of simply being told what a passage means, we are taught to discover it for ourselves. By observing the text carefully and comparing Scripture with Scripture through cross-references, we learn to understand God’s Word in its proper context. This gives members the confidence and skills to discover, discern and apply God’s truth for themselves and, over time, deepen their personal relationship with God.

WT: In what ways does deep, verse-by-verse study change how a person responds to God’s voice in everyday life?

Richard: Deep, verse-by-verse study teaches us to slow down and listen to what God is saying through His Word. As we discover the truth for ourselves, it challenges our attitudes, choices and priorities.

When we apply what we learn, it shapes how we respond, make decisions and relate to others. For me, this is the beauty of Precept. It moves us from knowing God’s Word to living God’s Word.

MONICA YAN (Strangely Warmed Retreat)
God’s grace and purpose continue to flourish in every season of life. Strangely Warmed Retreat (SWR) is dedicated to nurturing church members spiritually, emotionally and physically, ensuring that no one walks alone. Through these retreats, members find a vibrant community of care and mutual encouragement.

WT: What does the SWR ministry entail?

Monica: Our retreats encompass corporate learning, gender-specific sharing, personal solitude with God and optional spiritual companion sessions that help participants listen together for what God is saying. Our hope is that every participant leaves with a heart strangely warmed by His grace.

ALVENA KHOO (Spiritual Companions)
Spiritual Companions offer a safe and confidential space where a trained companion walks alongside you, helping you notice where God is moving in your everyday life through attentive listening and reflective prayer.
