The festive spirit of Chinese New Year blended seamlessly with the joy of fellowship at Wesley Methodist Church’s Mandarin Ministry (MM) Evangelistic Outreach on 19 January 2025. A warm welcome was extended to 417 attendees, who gathered for an evening of faith, hope and the inspiring testimony of renowned Mediacorp actor, Mr Zhu Houren (朱厚任).

With a distinguished career spanning decades, Mr Zhu has made significant contributions to Singapore’s television and film industry. He rose to prominence through his roles in popular dramas throughout the 1990s and 2000s, including his iconic portrayal of “Long Ting Guang” (龙庭光) in the beloved series, “The Unbeatables” (双天至尊).

The programme commenced with vibrant worship, creating an atmosphere of spiritual reflection and renewal. Mr Zhu then captivated the audience with his heartfelt testimony, sharing his personal faith journey and his response to God’s call to serve in seniors’ ministry. He recounted his experiences visiting nursing homes, praying with residents and ministering to their needs. With honesty and humility, Mr Zhu spoke of his perseverance in this calling, even amidst health challenges and three major surgeries.
“For many years, I pursued recognition and success, believing they would bring true happiness. But it was a hollow pursuit,” Mr Zhu shared. “It was only when I surrendered my life to Christ that I discovered true peace and contentment. He filled the void in my heart that nothing else could.” His powerful words resonated deeply, moving many with their authenticity and vulnerability.

Ms Evelyn Lim, a 10-year member of the Mandarin Ministry, reflected: “Mr Zhu’s inspiring testimony about his struggles and faith deeply touched my heart. It reaffirmed Jesus’ enduring love and care, reminding me of God’s miraculous work in my life, both past and present. I am filled with gratitude and encouraged to always count my blessings.”
The service concluded with a heartfelt altar call, inviting those moved by Mr Zhu’s testimony and the message of hope to commit to following Jesus. Thirteen individuals responded, marking a beautiful new beginning in their lives, a fitting start to the Lunar New Year. The service also welcomed six first-time visitors.
A new initiative at this year’s event was the Mandarin Alpha booth, strategically located on the Plaza rooftop after the service. This provided an immediate opportunity for new believers and friends to connect with the Mandarin Alpha course, ensuring continuity in their spiritual journeys and integration into the church community.
“The Chinese New Year Evangelistic Outreach Event was a resounding success, demonstrating the power of personal testimony and the universal appeal of God’s love. We hope it will have a lasting impact on all who attended,” said Vincent Hong, chairperson of the Wesley Mandarin Ministry.
