Ecclesiastes 3; 4 and Psalm 147 (NIV)
(Jennifer Ho from SWR Committee)
READ:
Psalm 147 (NIV)
OBSERVE:
“Praise the Lord. How good it is to sing praises to our God…” (v.1)
The Psalmist begins with a joyful call to worship, reminding me that praising God is both right and delightful. It is not just an obligation, but good for my soul. Praise redirects my focus from my problems to God’s power and goodness.
“The Lord builds up Jerusalem; he gathers the exiles of Israel. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (v.2,3)
These verses speak of God’s deep compassion. He doesn’t merely rule over the universe but is intimately involved in human life, gathering the scattered, comforting the wounded, and bringing restoration to the broken.
“He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.” (v. 4,5)
God’s knowledge and might amaze me. He who names the stars also binds up my wounds. His greatness doesn’t distance Him, but extends His loving care to me.
APPLY:
The passage makes me reflect on God’s everlasting love. He heals and restores me in times of loss, separation and emotional pain. In Him I find hope. Yet God’s power is also beyond comprehension. The same God who created the galaxies knows my name and story, and is close to me, being deeply aware and lovingly involved in my life.
I am reminded to worship and praise God in every circumstance and situation. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 says there is a time for everything. Nothing that happens on earth is without God’s knowledge. Everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it (Ecc 3:12). I will trust in God’s sovereignty.
DO:
I will:
1. Make praise part of my daily routine to thank God for who He is and what He has done through music, prayer or journaling.
2. Bring my emotional and spiritual wounds to God in prayer. I want to seek comfort from His words and prayer.
3. Let go of the need to control everything. I will trust God’s infinite wisdom when life feels overwhelming.
PRAY:
Lord God, thank You for reminding me of Your greatness, faithfulness and providence. I praise You for who You are and what You have done. Nothing is too big for You and everything is in Your control. Help me to live with greater trust, gratitude and purpose. You have made everything beautiful in its time. In Jesus’s name I pray. Amen!
