Reflecting On The Spiritual Qualities Of Leadership Through David
BRD REFLECTION 2026
Matthew 5:31-37 and Psalm 38:17–22 (NIV)

READ:
Psalm 38:17–22 is an incredibly heavy psalm of lament. Even in the depths of profound agony, David chooses to cry out to God.
OBSERVE:
Four Qualities of a Spiritual Leader
(1) Absolute Authenticity (v. 17): Despite being a king and the Lord’s anointed, David did not mask his weaknesses. Instead, he honestly confessed his inner struggles before God.
(2) Prioritizing Self-Examination (v. 18): When a mature leader faces adversity, he first examines his own relationship with God, rather than shift the blame onto others.
(3) Courageously Facing Challenges (vv. 19-20): In the face of powerful and unreasonable enemies, he remained steadfast in upholding the truth.
(4) Total Dependence on God (vv. 21-22): His three-fold plea reveals human limitation. A leader’s true strength and reliance rest solely in God’s presence and salvation.
APPLY:
In my journey of faith and leadership, I recognise the importance of continually maintaining a heart of humility and repentance, acknowledging my shortcomings before God rather than hiding them. No matter what circumstances I face, I am committed to persisting in truth and striving to do good, refusing to let difficulties compromise my integrity. Especially in moments when I feel weak or overwhelmed, I want to make it my instinct to seek God’s help immediately, trusting in His strength and presence to carry me through.
DO:
I will begin with self-reflection, creating a list of confession and bringing my shortcomings before the Lord, asking for His forgiveness and cleansing. When I encounter opposition or persecution, I choose to respond by praying for those who stand against me, repaying evil with good as Christ teaches. I commit to standing firm in truth, refusing to let external pressures sway me from what is right. Above all, I aim to anchor my life in God’s strength, seeking to establish a consistent and stable prayer life that allows me to remain steadfast.
PRAY:
Lord! I pray that You will be with me and remind me: in the spiritual battlefield of leadership, true victory is not won in the boardroom, but in the prayer closet. When I face challenges and pressures, grant me a heart like David’s—to thirst for You more and lean on You deeper. Even in my weakness, let me look to Your help and Your presence. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
