READ:
Matthew 5:13-20 (NIV)
OBSERVE:
Matthew 5:13–20 was written in the context of the Sermon on the Mount. Here, Jesus was teaching His disciples what it means to live as the people of God. He calls them to a way of life that reflects God’s character in the world.
In Matthew 5:17–20, Jesus clarifies the purpose of His earthly life and ministry. He did not come to abolish the Law of Moses but to fulfill it. Jesus lived in perfect obedience, not merely to the letter of the Law, but to its true spirit and heart. His life revealed God’s original intention behind the Law: love and righteousness, as well as wholehearted obedience and devotion to God.
APPLY:
Through His death on the cross, Jesus became the perfect sacrifice for sin. Because of this, the requirements of the Law are fulfilled in Him. I no longer need to work and earn my salvation and righteousness through human effort, but through faith in Christ. It is only by His grace, not my own strength, that I am able to live in a way that pleases God.
With this understanding, Jesus’ call for me to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world becomes possible. This calling is not burdensome, nor a demand imposed on me; rather, it is a life empowered by God’s grace. As I live closely with Jesus, He enables me to be the salt that does not lose its saltiness. He enables me to be the light that shines for others and to be His witness in the world. My life then becomes a testimony of Jesus’ work in me, and He is made known through my life journey on this earth.
DO:
Spiritual disciplines are like salt that preserves my relationship with Jesus. Daily reading of and meditation on God’s Word, along with prayer, are crucial in helping me remain close to Christ.
Acts of kindness are ways for me to become a witness and to make Christ known. They must become a way of life that reflects Jesus, allowing His light to shine through me to others.
PRAY:
Dear God,
Please empower me to live a life that shows I belong to You. Help me to be kind and loving to those around me. Enable me to reflect Your light so that those who do not yet know You may come to see and know You through my life.
In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
