BRD REFLECTION 2026

Matthew 11:11-19 and Psalm 49:1-9 (NIV)

(Audrey Ng, Children’s Ministry)

READ:

Matthew 11:11-19 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

Jesus said that John the Baptist was the greatest prophet who was sent to prepare the way for the coming of the Lord, and that John was the prophesied Elijah that Malachi spoke about (Malachi 3:1). John defied all expectations, started the practice of baptism and baptized Jesus Himself! John preached repentance  but the people practiced violence (v12).  Instead of obedience, they rejected the message, even killing the messengers.

So what is the problem and why is this happening? Jesus is saying that the problem is not with Himself, John or the gospel message. The problem is with the people and their expectations. Jesus makes a powerful point – John and Jesus could not meet the people’s expectations even if they tried. No matter what they said or did, if the people did not like their message, they would find a way to dismiss them and reject them.

Then Jesus says that if they are “willing to accept” (v14), listen and understand (v15), they will see the Messiah and the work that He is expected to do. Jesus broke expectations about what it means to follow Him – to be a friend of sinners (v19).

APPLY:

As I reflect on this passage, what are my expectations as a follower of Jesus: Do I expect blessings at work and for my family? Do I expect Jesus to call on me only when I am available to be of service to him? Do I complain like a spoilt child when things do not go as expected?

I am reminded that Jesus challenges my expectations. I do not tell God what I want, because He is God. God tells me what His plans are for me.

DO:

I will remember these words from the Wesley Covenant Service liturgy:

“It is necessary, therefore,
that we consider what it means to be a servant of Christ.

Let us, therefore, go to Christ, and pray:

Let me be your servant, under your command.
I will no longer be my own.
I will give up myself to your will in all things.

Be satisfied that Christ shall give you your place and work…”

PRAY:

Dear Lord Jesus,

Help me to be a faithful servant who yields to Your will and plans. When my expectations are broken, help me refrain from complaining. I trust that Your plans are good and I will always give thanks.

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
