OBSERVE:
This was Paul’s personal letter to his friend, Philemon, informing him of wonderful news about Philemon’s runaway slave, Onesimus, who was a changed man. Paul asked Philemon to welcome Onesimus as a fellow believer and follower of Christ. It is a very well-written letter, showing care and concern for both Philemon and Onesimus.
APPLY:
It is easy to desire to be an encourager as the Bible teaches – ‘on the basis of love’ (v9). Sadly, it is hard to do this well. It is a challenge for me to be like Paul, to be bold in the encouragement of his friends on difficult issues.
Paul was indeed respectful when he boldly said to Philemon in verses 19-21, that ‘you owe me your very self’, ‘that I may have some benefit from you in the Lord’ and ‘knowing that you will do even more than I ask’. Paul expected Philemon to heed his advice and do the right thing by Onesimus. He was setting Philemon up for the high standards, and why not, as Christ, our enabler, would help Philemon accomplish these high standards. Likewise Christ has set similar high standards for me, which He will help me reach if I am willing.
I want to be in Philemon’s shoes too and be open to receiving nuggets of wisdom and advice from my faith community.
This passage is also a reminder to appreciate the help I have received at my workplace, at church from my co-workers, and at home. I am grateful for the many Onesimuses in my life.
DO:
I will consciously edify and encourage others especially in email messages.
I will show appreciation to the Onesimus-like persons who support me in the workplace, ministry, and at home.
I want to be that friend who Paul was to Philemon; bold and honest to say difficult things in truth and in love.
I want to love others the way Jesus did.
PRAY:
Lord Jesus, I thank you for the grace you have given me and my family. They are truly new each day. Thank you for the reminder that we are part of a faith community. Please help me to encourage others as Paul did for Philemon and for Onesimus. Make me conscious of your presence today and every day, that I may love others the way you love me.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
