BRD REFLECTIONS:

Hebrews 6 and Psalm 141 (NIV)

(Serene Chia, Assistant Zone Leader, Zone 1)

READ:

As I read Hebrews 6 NLT, the verses that spoke to me were:

  • v13-14: For example, there was God’s promise to Abraham. Since there was no one greater to swear by, God took an oath in his own name, saying: “I will certainly bless you, and I will multiply your descendants beyond number.”
  • v18: So God has given both his promise and oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold on to the hope that lies before us.

OBSERVE:

God did not just give us His promise, He also bound Himself with an oath (v17) so that those who received His promise would be perfectly sure that He would not change His mind. God has also given us Jesus who has become our eternal high priest (v20).

When I read this passage, I was deeply touched. Certainly, who we are and what we have done do not warrant any promises or oaths from God. Yet, He is faithful.

APPLY:

Just as God is faithful to His promise, I am called to be faithful in my commitments — whether it’s to family, work, or the areas where God has called me to serve. In all this, He desires for me to be diligent and not be sluggish. I will continue to show love to others, not for a moment but for as long as life lasts (v11). This is because I have hope in what lies ahead, to win the prize that God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:14).

DO:

I will remind myself to:

  • Be patient and maintain hope in God’s promises, especially during times of uncertainty or when facing challenges. This means I will invest time in prayer and reflection, finding peace in the assurance of God’s unchanging nature and His faithfulness to fulfil His promises.
  • Recognise opportunities to serve not as burdens but as blessings, reflecting God’s love through acts of kindness and service to those around me. This might involve lending a helping hand without expecting anything in return or simply being a consistent source of support and encouragement to family and friends.

PRAY:

Dear God, thank You for Your unfailing promise and oath that offers us an anchor of hope. Help me to trust in Your eternal word and to reflect Your love in my actions towards others. Grant me the strength to serve with a joyful heart and the patience to wait on Your perfect timing. In the daily walk of life, let me be a living testimony of Your grace and truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
