Wesleyans celebrated the closing of Love Singapore’s 40 Days of Prayer & Fasting with the Wesley Day Of Prayer (WDOP) on Saturday 6 August 2022. It was a perfect day for the church community to set out on a prayer walk as the morning dawned with clear blue skies.
In July, the church began praying and fasting on Tuesday evenings after dinner, and broke fast as a community on Wednesday night, following the Wesley Prayer Service at 9 pm. A final fast took place on the Friday evening of 5 August 9 pm to Saturday 6 August 12 noon.
Held on 6 August, from 9 am-12 pm at the Wesley Methodist Church Sanctuary, the WDOP programme comprised worship, sharing of the Word by Rev Raymond Fong (see sermon outline below) and a one-hour prayer walk to discern God’s burdens and purposes for our church.
Some 170 people came with eager and willing hearts to intercede for the land around Wesley as she sees her role as a church in the city to care, love and pray for all around her.
It was an uplifting collaboration, with the Youth Ministry team leading in a time of worship and praise. Some families brought along their young children to experience walking and praying for blessings and revival of the land.
Following the sermon by Pastor Raymond, members went for the prayer walk at 10 am, with Ezlink cards, caps, umbrellas and water bottles in tow. The sky remained clear throughout.
There were nine prayer walk venues nearby the church for the congregation to choose from. A total of nine teams proceeded with the walk, each led by pastoral team members and a pastor.
At the end of the walk, everyone gathered back in church for a time of sharing. Pastor Raymond moderated the session as team leaders shared their group’s reflections gleaned during the walk.
Following the sharing was a time of worship, and the Holy Communion was served. Church members broke fast with a simple meal of soup and buns at 12 noon.
Sermon outline
Pastor Raymond preached about the Principles of Prayer Walking, and the key points are as follows:
- We need God-led insight as we seek God for His intention for the land.
Prayer walks are praying on site with insight.
- We need God-inspired burdens as we discern and confirm the burdens and assignments from God.
We are to have a posture asking God to:
- reveal His heartbeat
- revive and bestow peace, give wisdom, bring restoration and bless our neighbours.
Reflections about the Prayer Walk
Here are some reflections shared by participants.
- During the walk there was thanksgiving for God’s creation, mercy and provision. There was also appreciation for the migrant and foreign workers who helped build and care for our land and God’s faithful provision of economic growth.
There was a sense of gratefulness too, for a multi-racial land that has racial and religious harmony, with a vibrant art and cultural scene, especially around the Wesley Methodist Church area, with praying for the leaders of the nation to have the wisdom to protect and build Singapore.
- Participants prayed for believers to seek God for
– repentance and cleansing of the land
– the Church to remain holy
– receiving blessings and blessing others
– families to have godly values, and be others-centered bringing others to salvation
– marriages to be strong, with God-centred parenting - Participants were reminded to love and care for the less fortunate and to feed the homeless and isolated, bringing hope to those searching for it.
