God’s Saving Grace for an Elderly Client

I am a volunteer with Wesley Golden Years Get-together (WGYG), a befriending programme that reaches out to seniors in the Jalan Berseh area. We connect with them through calls, texts and visits, offering companionship and support.

A few weeks ago, I visited one of our regular seniors, Mr Ba, to remind him about our WGYG programme happening the next day. I stood outside his house to speak to him but Mr Ba kept insisting that I enter. I decided to accept his invitation and go in.

That decision turned out to be an opportunity to sow seeds of the gospel. Even though my Mandarin is not perfect, I felt the Holy Spirit guiding me and giving me the words to speak to him. I encouraged Mr Ba to call on Jesus in times of need, using simple phrases like “Jesus help me” (耶稣帮我) or “Jesus heal me” (耶稣医治我). Then I prayed a blessing for him.

The following day, despite a fall earlier and hurting his chest, Mr Ba insisted on coming to the WGYG meeting. We were glad to see him. But later that evening, we received troubling news: Mr Ba had suffered a stroke and was hospitalised. Immediately, our volunteers joined together in prayer for his recovery.

A few days later, a fellow volunteer, Kim, and I visited Mr Ba in the hospital. We noticed he was a changed person; he looked joyful and had a glow on his face. He told us he had been praying to Jesus for healing! When I asked why, he said it was because of our conversation. Seeing his faith and readiness, I led Mr Ba in the Sinner’s Prayer, and he accepted Jesus as his Saviour!

This experience taught me so much about God’s grace. Even with limited language skills, the Holy Spirit can work through us to share the gospel effectively. Before visiting Mr Ba, Kim and I had prayed for God’s guidance. Prayer reminds us that we depend on God’s strength, not our own. I almost missed visiting Mr Ba because my daughter was sick, but God answered our prayers, and she recovered quickly. He removed the obstacle so I could witness this precious moment of salvation.

Since then, other volunteers have visited Mr Ba to support his new faith and provide him with resources. Following Mr Ba’s decision to receive salvation, two home visitation befrienders, Kim and Tony Wong, visited him at Ang Mo Kio Community Hospital to confirm his decision and offer him a copy of the new believer’s booklet “Gift of a New Life” (新生命的礼物), which they encouraged him to read. We are excited to welcome him back to the WGYG events and activities when he recovers.

Mr Ba’s testimony is a powerful testament to God’s love, and I hope it will inspire us to celebrate the miracles God performs every day. God is still very much at work in all our lives.
