READ:

Proverbs 27 and Psalm 119:65-80 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

Proverbs 27:1 reminds me of the uncertainty of life. This verse encourages humility, recognizing that no one can predict what tomorrow holds. Psalm 119:80 emphasizes that true security in life comes from following God’s decrees. By obeying His laws and using them as guidance, I will not be put to shame. My reliance should be on God’s commandments as a guide for life.

APPLY:

Growing up, I was taught the importance of planning through formal education and at home. I learned to prepare for rainy days and ensure there is enough for tomorrow. My family instilled in me the habit of making plans and having extra provisions for the future. My siblings and I were always aware of our homework and responsibilities, and we were taught to communicate our schedules responsibly. For example, if we informed our parents that we would be home by 9pm, we had to call by 8pm if we couldn’t make it back on time.

As a result, I make plans and stick to them, though I remain flexible and open to changes. I find comfort in having a basic framework to work from. Recently, I started making plans for my later life stages. Having these plans in place gives me a sense of peace. However I have learnt that if my plans provide more security than my trust in God’s sovereignty, my security is misplaced.

God’s Word provides decrees and laws that guide us in living. Following them ensures security and prevents shame. I should pursue a life of righteousness and obedience to God’s laws, as mentioned in Psalm 119, rather than relying solely on my efforts to ensure everything is right and ready.

DO:

Upon reflection, I confess that I enjoy planning when I should be spending more time delighting in God’s decrees. I will trust in Him as He holds my future. I shall live life relying on His commandments and surrendering to His sovereignty, rather than depending on making plans and following them carefully.

PRAY:

My Lord, my delight should be in Your decrees. Remind me that You are more trustworthy and faithful than any carefully drawn plan. Teach me not to boast about tomorrow but to follow You wholeheartedly. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
