Lest I Fall Into The Pit
BRD REFLECTION 2025
Proverbs 28:1-28 and Psalm 119:81-96 (NIV)
(David Mok, Associate Lay Leader)
READ:
Both passages in Psalm 119 and Proverbs 28 spoke to me.
OBSERVE:
I have always wondered what Kaph and Lamedh mean in Psalm 119. Thanks to modern-day online resources, where references are easy to come by, I now know they are the eleventh and twelfth Hebrew alphabets respectively, referring to the eleventh and twelfth sections of the psalm. Interestingly, these alphabets have meanings. Kaph symbolizes bowing down and submission, and in this context, the verses express the psalmist’s hope and faith in God. Lamedh symbolizes learning and teaching. It seems that God’s message to me today from this psalm is to continue to have faith and hope in Him and to be teachable by Him.
What about the book of wisdom, Proverbs? It is my favourite book in the Old Testament. A large part of my character is shaped by the wisdom of this wonderful book. Chapter 28 exhorts us to keep God’s instructions, seek Him, and trust Him, and there will be good outcomes. Conversely, if we forsake God’s instructions, there will be dire consequences. The message to me from this passage is to continue to fear God, as it is the beginning of wisdom.
APPLY:
God’s message for me today is divinely apt and appropriate as it happens to be my birthday, which are milestones for reflection on the past and pondering about the future. Indeed, God is reminding me of my past, emphasizing my adherence to the wisdom of Proverbs and how, through all my submission and faith in Him, I have been kept safe. But He is also giving me a warning: I am not done yet. I need to continually be taught by Him and persevere in my faith and hope in Him, lest I fall into the pit.
DO:
I will need to be more disciplined in my daily devotions and prayers. I will persevere in trusting our Lord and keeping my heart soft and malleable to His teachings. There is still so much more to be done to help those around me.
PRAY:
Dear God, thank You for Your timely message for me today. Thank You for Your faithfulness in the years past. Grant me a malleable heart and to be always receptive to Your teachings. May You continue to be the shining light in the years remaining ahead of me. In Jesus’ name I pray.
