Luke 3:1–38 (NIV)

The passage that speaks deeply to me is Luke 3:8–14. John the Baptist reminds us that true repentance bears fruit in our actions. He cautions against complacency or dependance on heritage and status. When people ask,

“What should we do?”, John gives practical, clear guidance:

• To the crowd: Share generously—if you have two shirts or extra food, give to those in need.

• To tax collectors: Act with honesty—collect only what is required.

• To soldiers: Live with integrity—avoid extortion, false accusations, and be content with your pay.

Repentance is not abstract; it transforms how we treat others and steward our resources.

As we journey through Lent, let us move beyond words and allow God’s love to shape our daily lives—in our homes, workplaces, and communities. John’s teaching reminds us that following Christ means using our influence and resources with justice and compassion.

If we desire to be a Caring Church through Vision 2035, we are called to share what we have—our time, talents, and attention—not just finances. What “extra shirt” or “food” might God be inviting you to offer this season?

To be a Missional Church, integrity matters. Like the tax collectors and soldiers, we must resist the temptation to exploit, manipulate, or compromise our values. Our conduct should reflect God’s Kingdom—marked by fairness, contentment, and ethical choices. These small, consistent acts of faith speak powerfully to the world.

Often, we think being missional means doing something grand. But it can begin with your own family members. Last Christmas, my sister and I invited another sister to the Christmas service at WMC. It was her first time in church. She was touched by the friendly and welcoming congregation. We pray that a seed of faith had been planted. On January 1, I began a year-long Bible reading plan with my other sister, who is the only Christian living with our family in our hometown. We share daily reflections via WhatsApp—a simple way to encourage and stay accountable. These small steps have blessed us deeply. I encourage her to attend Wesley’s courses that are held online too.

[ Reflection Questions ]

  1. What practical resource can you share this Lent to embody a Caring Church?
  2. In your work or daily life, where might you struggle with integrity or contentment? What action will you take to bear good fruit?
  3. In which area—Welcoming, Missional, or Caring—is God inviting you to grow in this Lent?
