READ:
Matthew 10:37-42 (NIV)
OBSERVE:
Jesus is not satisfied with His disciples loving their family or others more than they love Him. By loving them, aren’t they applying what Jesus commands them to do? In some situations, it may be easy to love people who are pleasant, who agree or approve of what they say and do but in other situations, it is more convenient for them to avoid those they have difficulty getting along with or who are not receptive when they share their faith. Jesus cautions them that sometimes, they prioritise their wants and desires to make their lives easier and more comfortable ahead of serving God and obeying Him.
APPLY:
What does it mean to love God more than my family? It means loving God and desiring to obey Him in all that I do. Loving others becomes a reflection of my love for our dear Lord. Taking up the cross for Christ means identifying with Him and His teachings more openly, and by having no reservations about sharing my faith when it is appropriate to share the love of God in my community. I should not focus on the rewards that this earthly life may offer but I should free my grasp on these earthly rewards so that I may freely receive the grace and benefit of following Christ! God knows all that I do and it is as if He receives the benefits from my service as I serve others in accordance with His Will.
DO:
When I love and serve my community, I will remember that I am also doing this to Christ and for His sake.
PRAY:
Dear Lord, thank You for Your gift of Jesus and that I am free to follow and be like Him. Show me how I may be an instrument of Your blessings as I serve You in faithful obedience. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
