Saying Yes On His Terms
BRD REFLECTION 2026
Matthew 10:1-16 and Psalm 45:1-9 (NIV)
(Gaius Ho from BRD Core Team & Communications Ministry)
READ:
As I read today’s passages, I was drawn to Jesus’ instructions to His disciples in Matthew 10:9-10 – “Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts – no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep.”
OBSERVE:
In this passage, Jesus sends the twelve disciples on a mission with clear objectives: to proclaim that “the kingdom of heaven has come near,” to heal the sick and afflicted, to raise the dead, and to demonstrate God’s power over evil (v7–8). While the disciples had already witnessed and participated in Jesus’ ministry, this marked the first time they were formally commissioned to act independently under His authority.
Jesus then instructed them to go without money or supplies for their journey, relying instead on the hospitality of those they would meet. In doing so, the disciples were called to depend entirely on God, both for the fruitfulness of their mission and for their daily sustenance.
APPLY:
Three thoughts I gleaned from verses 9 and 10 are:
First, the disciples were obedient to the call. They had accompanied Jesus, watching, learning, and supporting His ministry, but the time had come for them to act. This calling was not about their ability, but their availability. I am reminded of the advice I often received during my early days of volunteering, especially whenever I felt uncertain about new undertakings: “Just do your best; let God do the rest.” And He has been faithful to this day.
Second, the disciples set out without taking anything with them, remaining focused on their mission while trusting God to guide and provide. This reminds me that true security is not found in material possessions, personal resources, or even abilities. My assurance and hope rest in God, who equips, guides, and provides for every assignment He entrusts to me. This has been a recurring experience as I place my dependence on Him while serving day by day.
Third, God provided for the disciples’ physical needs through people. This speaks to me in two ways. On the one hand, self‑sufficiency is not a hallmark of Christian living; receiving help and support with humility is an essential part of the discipleship journey, not a weakness. On the other hand, as God provides, my response is to live as a faithful steward – being generous and hospitable with my abilities, time, and resources.
DO:
In summary, and as a response to the lessons drawn:
- I seek to say ‘yes’ more readily and obediently when God calls, resisting the urge to wait for ideal conditions, and choosing availability over ability.
- As I step into God’s assignments, I will trust in His provision rather than relying on my own gifts, resources, or sense of security.
- I will live interdependently, recognising that God provides through others, by receiving support with humility and giving generously as part of faithful discipleship.
PRAY:
Dear Lord, thank You for calling me to follow You and for trusting me to serve. Give me a willing and obedient heart when You call, and the courage to step forward in faith and depend on Your provision. Teach me to receive help with humility and to steward faithfully all that You have generously given. All praise and glory to You as I commit this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
