Matthew 9:27-38 and Psalm 44:17-26 (NIV)

(Heather Ong from Small Group Ministry)

READ:

Matthew 9:27-38 and Psalm 44:17-26 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

Jesus was in Capernaum when two blind men followed Him, crying out to the Son of David for mercy. Jesus asked them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” “Yes, Lord,” they replied (v28), and because of their faith, He healed them.

Next, Jesus cast out a demon, and the mute, demon-possessed man was able to speak. While the multitudes marvelled, the Pharisees attributed the act to demonic powers.

In Psalm 44, God had given Israel victory in the past, but now, Israel was defeated and felt forsaken. The psalmist protested that Israel had remained faithful, yet suffered for God’s sake. He ended the psalm by imploring God to intervene urgently (v23-26).

APPLY:

The blind men had no physical sight, but they were focused and spiritually insightful in recognising Jesus as the Messiah. They had faith that He would be merciful and restore their sight. On the other hand, the Pharisees witnessed a demon being cast out yet attributed the act to the wrong source of power and authority.

I, too, have often missed the truth. When things have gone well, I have attributed these outcomes to my good timing, good decision-making, and my own effort, blind to God’s hand at work and His constant providence for me.

When things have been difficult, I have blamed God and adopted an entitled attitude. Psalm 44 shows me a way to be honest with God about my disappointments and sorrows. I can recall the truth of His past faithfulness, and shift my focus beyond my present circumstances. Like the blind men, I should look to Jesus the Messiah and believe that He will bring deliverance and restoration.

DO:

  1. I will look to Jesus and be more aware of His presence in my daily activities.
  2. I will practise gratitude for His blessings and seek to bless others as well.
  3. In difficult times, I will remain steadfast and cling to the promises of Jesus.

PRAY:

Heavenly Father, You are a God of mercy and compassion! Thank You for Your unfailing love for me, even when I waver and am distant from You. Like the blind men, may I say “Yes, Lord,” and keep looking to You. I trust You to further open my eyes and my heart, and draw me closer to You every step of the way. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
