READ:

2 Corinthians 9 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

Is my act of giving accompanied with love?

Paul reminded the Corinthians that their act of love was not only supplying the needs of God’s people but was also an overflowing expression of thanks to God. Their giving would benefit believers in Judea, and believers from that region would see their obedience in giving and praise God in turn. Their act of love through giving would have honored God.

APPLY:

I recall years ago when I was at Bible College, I was shopping at an NTUC supermarket one day. As a Bible student staying at a hostel, I did not need much. Although I had picked up what I needed, I continued walking around the supermarket. While walking among the shelves of groceries, my eyes landed on packets of dried bee hoon, and immediately a person’s name came to mind. I sensed that I needed to get a packet for this person, who was my course mate. As a Bible student not supported by any church, I had limited resources, but God’s provision never failed. Without hesitation, I happily bought the bee hoon and delivered it to my course mate. He received it silently without a word, but with a grateful expression on his face.

DO:

The act of giving should be accompanied by love and a remembrance of God’s love for us through His gift of His Son, Jesus Christ, who died on the cross for us. It is through Jesus Christ that we are redeemed from our sins and gain eternal life. By God’s grace, He gives me the ability to give and share. I should give generously with a heart filled with love, care, and thoughtfulness for the recipient, without expecting any reward. A loving gift will always warm the heart of the recipient and hopefully remind them to be grateful to God.

PRAY:

Father, thank You for giving Your Son, Jesus Christ, as an indescribable gift to us—to save us from our broken lives and to redeem us from our sins. Teach us to follow Your example and give generously to the needs of people and ministry with a smile and love from our hearts. Amen.
