Be Awake And Sober

BRD REFLECTION 2026

1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 and Psalm 110 (NIV)

(Ng Su-Ran from Discipleship & Nurture)

READ:

1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

We may not know the date or time when Christ will come, but we know with certainty that He will come. In the meantime, we are instructed to be awake (alert) and sober (self-controlled), to live with faith, love, and the hope of salvation. We are also to encourage one another and build each other up.

APPLY:

We read and hear every day of wars, political tensions, economic uncertainties, changing climate patterns, and seemingly endless disasters. It is easy to be consumed by all these, becoming anxious about how events will unfold and worrying about our future.

The passage reminds me that there is something of greater importance and certainty—the return of Christ. While events in the world churn on, we should not lose sight of the fact that He will return.

We must not be too distracted or caught up in the endless news and turmoil around us. Instead, we should keep our focus on God, becoming more disciplined and intentional in our discipleship.

We have to place our faith in Him—to trust and rest in Him and to bring our plans, circumstances, and difficulties to Him, knowing that He is always with us.

We are also called to keep His commandments: to love God with our heart, soul, and mind, and our neighbour as ourselves (Matthew 22:37–39).

Our hope of salvation lies in the knowledge that Christ died for our sins and that God intends for us to live with Him.

We need to remain in community, whether in small groups or other ministry groups, so as to support one another in our discipleship journey.

DO:

I need to set aside time each day to be with God—to read His Word, to be still before Him, to pray, and to rest in His presence and peace.

I need to care for and show love to the people around me—to give help, time, and a listening ear.

I need to stay close to the people in my Bible study and small groups so that we may encourage one another and hold each other accountable.

PRAY:

Our Heavenly Father, thank You for the hope of our salvation. Help us to keep our focus on You and, together with members of our church, to grow in our faith and love. Amen.
