1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 (NIV)
OBSERVE:
Paul addresses misunderstandings about what happens to Christians who die before Christ’s return. The believers were sorrowful and anxious because they feared that loved ones who had already passed away would miss out on the glory of the coming kingdom.
Paul reassures them that, regardless of whether a Christian has died or is still alive, their future is secure in Jesus Christ. Death does not remove or diminish the believer’s share in Christ’s promised salvation and glory, as our hope rests on our faith in the resurrected Christ. We will all be united in Christ.
APPLY:
Grief is a natural and essential response when we lose a loved one. We miss their presence, companionship, and conversations. However, we do not grieve without hope. Amid our sorrow, we have the certainty that a reunion and celebration are coming because Jesus has said, “I am going there to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2). This gives us hope and comfort that all who believe in Him will one day be together with Him forever. Though many years have passed since I lost some family members and friends, the grief and sense of loss still linger. I have come to embrace this as part of life’s journey, allowing the Holy Spirit to transform my heart with trust and hope.
DO:
Through it all, I hold on to faith in Christ’s promises, knowing that He will return. I look forward to the day when the long-awaited reunion with Christ and my loved ones will finally take place. I will encourage others who may be grieving with words of assurance and hope.
PRAY:
Heavenly Father, we rejoice and thank You for the promises we have in Jesus Christ.
Lord Jesus, we look forward to the day when You will return, death will be no more, and those who have died in Christ will be raised. We look forward to that glorious reunion when we will be with You and our loved ones forever.
Until that day, help us to live with courage and hope. Keep our eyes fixed on You; may Your presence be our comfort and Your Word be our strength.
In Your precious name, we pray, Amen.
