Inspiring Leadership

BRD REFLECTION 2025

1 Chronicles 22; 23 and Psalm 77 (NIV)

READ:

As I read through these passages, 1 Chronicles 22 stood out to me.

OBSERVE:

This chapter records for us David’s careful preparation for the future building of the Temple and his exhortations to both the people and Solomon in building it. I was floored reading the entire chapter of 1 Chronicles 22 again, a powerful manual on spiritual leadership in itself where David demonstrates for me a leadership model that stems from a deep love for God and obedience to Him.

Upon hearing God’s commands in 1 Chronicles 17,  David, despite his  desire to be the one to build the Lord’s Temple, graciously accepted God’s decision to have Solomon build His Temple. David continued to make great effort to help provide all the resources needed (1 Chronicles 22: 2-5) and supported Solomon by rallying others to support him in building the Temple (1 Chronicles 22: 17-19). David modeled such an exceptional, inspiring and selfless leadership, so different from the leadership I have observed in our society. It was not about him. Rather, David was committed to help Solomon succeed in building the Temple.

David’s charge to Solomon and the people in building the Temple shows clearly where his priority and motivation to build the Temple came from: his love for God and obedience to Him (1 Chronicles 22: 11-13 & 17-19). It’s very telling in David’s charge that they were to prioritize seeking God, and everything that they did should stem from their love for God and their desire to honour Him.

APPLY:

I am inspired by David’s leadership and the way he did not just check out since God had chosen someone else to build the Temple but he remained actively supportive to the chosen leader (his son), providing resources and rallying others to come alongside to support his son. He is alright for others to shine instead of himself.

I’ve been exposed to leadership that’s rather self absorbed and fewer make efforts to actively help set a newer leader up to succeed. Question to myself: What can I do to help others succeed? I don’t always have to be in the spotlight.

I am reminded to search my heart: does everything I do for the Lord truly stem from my love for Him and desire to honour Him?

DO:

I want to do what I can to help others succeed and shine for Him.

I want to intentionally pause to re-align my motivation in all that I do for Him.

PRAY:

Dear God, thank You for the honour and privilege to serve You. May everything that I do overflow from my love for You and desire to honour You. Help me to actively support others, to set them up to succeed and shine for You. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
