Intentional Missionary
BRD REFLECTIONS
(Joyce Lo, Chairperson, Campus Ministry)
READ:
Acts 13 (NIV)
OBSERVE:
Acts 13 records the call to mission by God to Barnabas and Saul (also known as Paul). Thereafter their first missionary journey began. They were sent out “intentionally” by the church in Antioch after the prophets and teachers fasted and prayed and laid hands on them (v2-3). Paul’s call to mission has already been stated in Acts 9:15-16 where God had revealed it to Paul through Ananias. Hence at God’s appointed time, Barnabas and Paul set off for their mission journey empowered by the Holy Spirit. This mission led to the establishment of branches of the Church in areas far removed from Jerusalem and “opened the door of faith to the Gentiles” (Acts 14:27 NLT).
APPLY:
This chapter reminded me of my own call to the ministries that I am serving in now and in the past. Although it is important to understand the calling, purpose and the way of the Lord when we step into a ministry, it is even more important to pray for God’s guidance, boldness and faith when serving. I used to think that I have to serve in the areas where I had training in or areas where I am strong at but I have learned that God can also use me to step into unfamiliar ground to fulfill His greater purpose and mission. This is evident in my service to Him both in church and in the marketplace. He empowers me and prepares me in His divine way to be ready for the “job”. I only need to have faith, obedience, humility and trust Him to bring the work to fruition. Opposition may come but I continue to rely on the grace of God and His promises will be fulfilled.
DO:
In my service to Him, and whatever that can bring Him glory and magnifies His name, I will do it in obedience to His calling. I will continue to trust and obey, knowing that our final mission is to fulfill Matthew 28:18-20. I am full time for God and part time for the world. Knowing that I am here on this earth for this purpose, I have to seize every opportunity to share Christ with those around me.
PRAY:
Dear Heavenly Father, help me to remain faithful, obedient and grant me wisdom and strength to live right in this life. Though it may be difficult at times, strengthen my heart each time to overcome the difficulties and bear witness to Your name. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
