Where Is Your Heart?
BRD REFLECTION 2026
Matthew 6:16-34 and Psalm 40:6-10 (NIV)
(Jabez Fong, Pastoral Team)
READ:
As I read this passage, I was drawn to Matthew 6:19-21 and 24.
OBSERVE:
Jesus draws a contrast between two investments: storing temporary treasures on earth or storing eternal treasures in heaven. He sums it up with a profound truth that lays everything bare: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”.
In verse 24, He drives the point home even more poignantly: no one can serve two masters. Through our choices and desires, we will ultimately find that we hate one and love the other.
APPLY:
It’s easy to blame our consumeristic age for driving human greed and encouraging self-sufficiency. Jesus’s words, uttered 2,000 years ago, remind me that this problem is not new but it is as old as time. Jesus challenges me, “Where is your heart? What have you put your trust in?”
It’s a disconcerting question, but it reveals a darker side of me that I am reluctant to confront: the possibility that my master isn’t Jesus, but the world, and that nothing will truly ever be enough. I comfort myself by saying it’s alright to store up earthly treasures because my heart is still set on Jesus, but Jesus refuses to let me have it both ways.
Indeed, Jesus’s words in verse 24 cut particularly deeply because of the language. “Hate” and “despise” are strong words, and Jesus challenges me by reminding me that the love of material riches often means I am prioritising them over Him.
But Jesus isn’t exposing my heart to shame me, but to free me from it. I was made for more; that’s why nothing in this world will ever satisfy me. When I recognise my misguided affections, Jesus invites me to surrender them to Him and to trust in Him again.
DO:
Each day, I will search my heart and ask God to show me where my true affections lie: on the fading treasures of this world, or on Him. And if they are found to be in the wrong place, I will seek to align myself with Him, the One who meets all my needs.
PRAY:
Lord, I confess that my motivations in life are often divided, and I am often tempted to listen to the whispers of the world rather than Your voice. Help me remember who my true Master is and to correct my path so that it is directed to You alone. Amen.
In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
