Seek God In Humility, Repentance And Obedience
BRD REFLECTIONS:
Zephaniah 2:1-15 and Psalm 62:1-12 (NIV)
(Koh Geok Cheng from Local Church Executive Committee)
READ:
Much of Zephaniah 2 is about the oracles of destruction against Philistia, Moab, Ammon, Cush and Assyria. What stood out for me is verse 3, where the prophet Zephaniah called the people of Judah to humble themselves and turn to God in repentance and obedience to be saved from His anger.
“Seek the Lord, all you humble of the land,
you who do what he commands.
Seek righteousness, seek humility;
perhaps you will be sheltered
on the day of the Lord’s anger.’
OBSERVE:
Against what seems hopeless in the face of God’s impending judgment, God is merciful and gracious. He offers hope and salvation to those who seek Him in humility, obedience and repentance. Pride would lead to destruction as Zephaniah prophesied about the nations mentioned. But the humble and repentant would be safe.
APPLY:
I need to seek God daily in humility and examine my ways. Where I have drifted away from God, I need to repent and turn back to Him.
When I see others sin, I often look at them in disdain and feel they deserve to be punished in hell. However I am reminded that I should not judge them. Judgment belongs to God. God is also merciful and gracious; His gift of salvation is available to them if they are willing to humble themselves and repent of their sins. Instead of judging them, I should pray for God’s wisdom and strength to help me share the gospel with them.
DO:
I will:
1.Seek God daily to read His Word, pray, reflect and repent.
2. Walk in humility and obedience to God’s Word and will.
3. Pray for those who have yet to know God.
PRAY:
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for Your gift of salvation available to anyone who seeks and turns to You in humility and repentance. I am sorry for the times that I have let my pride and self-righteousness dictate my thoughts and ways. Please forgive me. Give me strength to seek You daily in Your Word, pray and repent of my thoughts and ways that do not honour You. May I humble myself to depend on You in all things, to walk in humility and obedience to You. Help me be a witness for You, reflecting Your light and grace so that others can come to know You. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
