(Jennifer Ho, SWR Committee Member)
READ:
Psalm 119:161-168 (NIV)
OBSERVE:
This passage reveals a profound connection between loving God’s Word and experiencing true peace, even amid persecution. The psalmist, a victim of unjust rulers, doesn’t succumb to fear but finds stability in his awe of God’s truth (v. 161-162).
The psalmist’s love for Scripture is deeply emotional, and he rejoices in God’s promises as if they were priceless treasures. This love also reflects a clear hatred for lies. He even praises God “seven times a day”, suggesting a constant, conscious rhythm of gratitude and recognition towards God (v. 163-164).
This unwavering focus on God’s law brings “great peace” and prevents him from stumbling. The psalmist’s trust in God’s salvation is active, and he obeys God while he waits. His obedience is a joyful expression of love, not a burdensome duty, transforming his relationship with God’s instructions (v. 165-166).
Ultimately, the psalmist lives transparently before God, confident that his heart and his obedience are fully seen. This passage teaches me that genuine peace and strength are a direct result of loving and living by God’s Word (v. 167-168).
APPLY:
The passage has led me to reflect on my spiritual footing to assess if it comes from a desire for human approval or from reverence for God’s law. The peace that I experience should not be dependent on comfortable external circumstances but from an internal alignment of my life with God’s will. The life of the psalmist challenges me to examine my own relationship with truth, habits of praise, and trust in God’s faithfulness, knowing He sees and walks with me through every trial.
DO:
I will:
- Revere God’s Word above any human approval or earthly authority.
- Cultivate a consistent habit of daily praise and gratitude—not just in good times, but also in tough times.
- Let God’s Word be my peace to strengthen me when I feel shaken. I want to be reminded that God sees me, knows me, and still loves me.
PRAY:
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word, which is a source of peace and strength even when I am swayed by the opinions of others or overwhelmed by pressure. Lord, deepen my love for Your law. Give me grace to live a life marked by constant gratitude, praise, and peace that comes from You. When I face trials and uncertainties, may my trust in Your Word be the anchor that keeps me from stumbling. Amen!
