Genesis 17 and Psalm 78:40–55 (NIV)

READ:
I reflected on Genesis 17 and Psalm 78:40–55. The verses that resonate most deeply with me are Psalm 78:52–53:
“But he brought his people out like a flock; he led them like sheep through the wilderness.
He guided them safely, so they were unafraid; but the sea engulfed their enemies.”
OBSERVE:
Psalm 78: vv.52–53 portray God as both a caring Shepherd and a faithful Deliverer. After rescuing Israel from Egypt, He did not leave them on their own but led them safely through the wilderness. These verses reveal God’s continual guidance, provision, and protection.
The image of a shepherd leading sheep highlights Israel’s complete dependence on God. Despite the dangers and uncertainty of the wilderness, God faithfully guided His people and removed their fear through His presence. At the same time, the sea engulfed their enemies, demonstrating both His power to save and His justice against those who opposed Him. These verses remind me that God faithfully guides and protects those who trust in Him.
APPLY:
These verses challenge me to consider whether I am truly allowing God to lead my life each day. I often become absorbed in my daily routine, giving little thought to God until I encounter difficulties or uncertainty. Like sheep that are safest when they stay close to their shepherd, I realise that I need to remain close to God continually, not only in times of need.
Genesis 17 reinforces this truth as God called Abraham to ‘walk before me faithfully.’ Walking with God is a daily relationship of trusting, obeying, and depending on Him. As I spend time in His Word, seek Him in prayer, and submit my plans to Him, I can trust that He is faithfully guiding me, even when the way ahead is unclear.
DO:
• Walk with God: Before I begin each day, I will spend a few quiet moments inviting God to guide my conversations, decisions, and actions so that I rely on His wisdom rather than my own.
• Turn to God First: Whenever I face challenges or anxiety, I will pause and pray before trying to solve the situation myself, trusting that God is already leading my steps.
PRAY:
Heavenly Father, thank You for being my faithful Shepherd who never leaves me to walk alone. Forgive me for relying on my own understanding instead of seeking You first. Help me to walk closely with You each day, trusting Your guidance in every decision and circumstance. May I grow in faith, depend on Your wisdom, and follow wherever You lead. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
