Deep Waters

BRD REFLECTION 2026

1 Corinthians 9:1-14 and Psalm 18:16-24 (NIV)

(Adam Leong from Worship & Music Ministry)

READ:

Psalm 18:16-17 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

The verse that jumped out at me is “He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters.” Psalm 18:16 NIV

More than once, I have made terrible choices resulting in terrible outcomes (“deep waters”), affecting not only me but those around me, people who love and care for me. Yet I was insensitive and oblivious to these people whom I was hurting, although it was not my intention to hurt them. I have strayed from the path God has called me to walk in, that is to be holy (1 Peter 1:16).

He has given me a choice to choose who I worship in my life journey. I never realised that the idols that I have been worshipping were not the gods of other religions but were idols which I have fashioned in the secret corners of my heart. Idols like independence, doing things whatever or whenever I feel like, without accountability or remorse. Idols like self-righteousness and pride which manifest in ways that I thought were actually good.

This lifestyle had led me to many painful circumstances which brought many hurts and pain into my life and in the lives of those who love and care for me.

But truly, God is great!

He reached down to me and pulled me out of the pain, troubles, and sin that were weighing me down. Where there was hopelessness and defeat, Jesus showed me in His Word that He is the hope and He is victorious. I only needed to humble myself, turn from my sinful ways (repent) and return to Him with gratefulness and joy.

APPLY:

The idols can still come back and destroy me, if I choose to let it. I can still choose to reject God. Therefore, I need to consciously and intentionally walk the life He has called me to—a life of holiness.

DO:

I surround myself with mature Christian brothers and sisters to whom I make myself accountable. I serve with them, read the Word with them and pray with them. The most important thing is the transformation in my character and attitude—that I should be more Christ-like, in my thinking, speaking and living.

PRAY:

Dear God, thank You for saving me from the mess I have made in the past. May the days ahead be a testimony of Your transforming work in my life so that I can be used as a channel of blessing to those around me. May You, dear Lord, also bless those who are reading this with Your special touch, assuring him/her that it is never too late to come back to You.

In the powerful and gentle name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
