Right Reckoning For Life’s Roads

Genesis 15 and Psalm 78:17-31 (NIV)

Genesis 15, looking at verse 6 in particular.
OBSERVE:
In this profoundly moving chapter, we see Abraham responding to God’s promise that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars and his act of belief was credited as righteousness, or in current language – in his being saved. Although he had shown faith in several earlier instances, here he was declared right before God. Some have said that this was Abraham’s crucial test of faith in the impossible as he and his wife Sarah were about 85 and 75 years of age respectively and childless.
He was saved not because he performed great religious acts, had great wisdom, or came from a good background, his faith was *in* God’s spoken word .
So how did Abraham have such faith in God? Before the written word, God spoke directly, as well as through dreams and messengers. He responded well in obedience and worshipped the one God in contrast to society then. The greatest test came in Hebrews 11:17 when he was told to sacrifice his only son Isaac and did so believing that according to God’s promises Isaac would be resurrected!
Another lesson here is that God delights to guide us, His children as we turn to Him.
APPLY:
God directly communicated with Abraham, but now to guide us we have the Bible, tradition, reason and experience as described in the Wesley Quadrilateral – working through the Holy Spirit. Knowing God’s Word, faithfully applying it in obedience builds the experience that equips one to step out in faith for the tough decisions in life.
After my studies, I felt God’s call to be a missionary. The usual uncertainties were there: financial insecurity, falling behind my peers, abandoning my training. But I considered that God could “resurrect” my marketplace career if needed. I stepped out in faith to serve; He provided for my needs and eventually led me back to the marketplace.
DO:
I will work on an issue I am delaying because of indecision. I will address it actively trusting God with the result that I will grow in obedience and trust Him for my life’s journeys.
PRAY:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the wonderful example of Abraham’s faith. Let me not control the life roads I travel as many times I choose comfort over obedience. Grant me the obedient trust to step out in faith as I ask it through Christ, Amen.
