READ:
2 Chronicles 22, 23 and Psalm 92 (NIV)
OBSERVE:
“But Jehoshabeath, the daughter of the king, took Joash the son of Ahaziah and stole him away …And he remained with them six years, hidden in the house of God, while Athaliah reigned over the land.” (2 Chronicles 22:11-12 (ESV)
Two Kings, two contrasting paths. Even though Joash was the son of Ahaziah, both couldn’t have led a life more distinctively different from one another. Ahaziah, surrounded by bad counsel, walked in the ways that were deemed evil in the sigh of the Lord, while Joash, hidden in the house of God, grew up to be one that did what was right in the eyes of the Lord all the days of Jehoiada the priest. (2 Chronicles 24:2). So, what are some of the insights that we can learn from these 2 chapters
- It is not the ENVIRONMENT that changes us but the PEOPLE that we surround ourselves with that will shape who we are.
- It only takes a single STEP of OBEDIENCE to create an IMPACT – Jehoshabeath took the bold step to steal Joash away from among the king’s sons who were about to be put to death.
- PATIENCE, there is time for it. – Joash remained hidden for six years while evil reigned over the land.
APPLY:
What are the discipleship lessons that we can take away from these 2 chapters?
- Surround yourself with friendships of accountability – We are called to be in the world, but not of the world. Break free from our comfort zone to serve those in need but constantly surround ourselves with friends or small groups that we can be accountable to.
- Obedience – God just needs us to take that first small step of obedience. Jehoshabeath took that step to save a child from among the king’s sons and trusted that her action would lead to an impact. She was not debating how many children she could save that she ended up not trying cause the task felt insurmountable.
- Wait – Be patient Joash was hidden for 6 years while evil was reigning on. Yet, he did not idle those 6 years away. He grew both physically and spiritually, hidden in the house of God, under the care and counsel of Jehoiada the priest.
DO:
I am reminded that even in a season of waiting, it is not one that is meant to be an idle or passive wait. God still wants me to constantly seek after Him, to grow and to mature for the task that is planned for me.
PRAY:
Lord, I pray that my heart will continue to be sensitive to Your voice and Your presence. May I turn those times of uncertainty or anxiety to one that longs after You so that I may be better equipped to be Your instrument as Your salt and light of the world.
