Jesus Christ My Wisdom

BRD REFLECTION 2025

Proverbs 8, Proverbs 9 and Psalm 108 (NIV)

(Grace Chew, from Small Group Ministry)

READ:

Proverbs 8:36 (NIV) “But those who fail to find me harm themselves; all who hate me love death.”

Proverbs 8:35 (NIV) “For those who find me find life and receive favor from the Lord”

Proverbs 9:10 (NIV) “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding”

OBSERVE:

In Proverbs 8, the writer alluded that wisdom is from God. Whoever hates God and His wisdom loves death; in this case not only physical death but also eternal death, which is the judgement for sin. Therefore, the writer made a strong case in Proverbs 8 and 9 to encourage people to stop turning away from God and His wisdom, emphasizing that God is the most precious gift.

APPLY:

Prior to this devotion, my understanding of wisdom is primarily a collection of teachings that are generally true and can come from various sources not limited to the bible. In recent weeks, I also had the opportunity to hear the regrets of a certain family member, and it got me thinking about the deeper meaning and usefulness of wisdom.

From today’s reading, I am reminded that only wisdom from God gives life. To this end, it is not only about understanding wisdom sayings as that is not sufficient to give us the abundant life which John spoke about in John 10:10. Instead, pursuing a life of wisdom is a deliberate effort of continually abiding in Jesus, experiencing a changed heart, contextualizing bible teachings and situations in the light of Jesus, and abiding in the safe boundaries that are spelt out in the bible. Without knowing our Lord Jesus intimately, I will not understand the essence of  God’s wisdom.

DO:

I will endeavour to stay on course with God, committing big and small decisions and affairs into His hands, and seeking His wisdom which  He gives generously (James 1:5).

PRAY:

Dear Lord, I pray for our family members and friends who do not yet have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, that  You may open their eyes and hearts to Your love, truth and wisdom. I pray for our brothers and sisters to continually abide in Jesus and live out that spiritually abundant life You have for us. Amen.
