2 Chronicles 20 & 21 and Psalm 91 (NIV)
(Woo Li Chun, from Discipleship & Nurture)
READ:
2 Chronicles 20 & 21 and Psalm 91(NIV)
OBSERVE:
The contrast between Jehoshaphat and his son Jehoram’s kingship is very stark. Jehoshaphat “… walked in the way of his father Asa, and did not turn aside from it, doing what was right in the sight of the Lord.” (2 Chronicles 20:32). Jehoram, on the other hand, “walked in the way of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab had done, … and he did evil in the sight of the Lord.” (2 Chronicles 21:6).
The outcomes are clear. Jehoshaphat trusted and relied on God and God destroyed Israel’s enemies and gave Jehoshaphat’s kingdom rest throughout his reign (2 Chronicles 20:1-31). Not so for Jehoram, who suffered a terrible death and lost his family, except for his youngest son whom God preserved “because of the covenant that He had made with David,”(2 Chronicles 21:7).
Joshua reminded the people before they cross Jordan, to “choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve,” (Joshua 24:15). Though a personal choice, it will affect all who came under the person’s influence. For the King, he affected the nation!
APPLY:
What’s in it for me? God’s promises of protection, provision and peace are most evident in Psalm 91. Do I go to God for His direction and choose to follow Him and keep to His boundaries?
Jehoshaphat suffered loss when he allied with the wicked King Ahaziah of Israel (2 Chronicles 20:35-37). Not that God is vindictive, but I must remember that God is holy and won’t condone wickedness. So if I choose to stop seeking Him, and step out of His banner of protection and blessing, I only have myself to blame.
DO:
Let me choose God and His ways in all that I do. On top of my own preferences and likes, and other family influences and worldly demands, let God be my go-to to frame all my decisions and choices at the word go.
PRAY:
Dear Lord, “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;” (Psalm 91:14). You have shown me the way and the truth and life. Be it that “… for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15). Help me to choose to follow You in all that I do. For You are a covenant keeping God! In Jesus’ faithful name Amen.
