I Can Pray With Confidence In Christ

BRD REFLECTION 2026

1 Corinthians 7:17-28 and Psalm 17:1-9 (NIV)

(Foo Yu Da,  from Witness & Evangelism)

READ:

Psalm 17:1-9 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

It is remarkable to me how confident David’s prayer was at a time when he was at risk of losing his life (v. 7–8). Clearly, David’s certainty is not based on God having answered all of his prayers, since we see signs of God’s silence in passages such as Psalm 13 and Psalm 38. This tells me that David’s unwavering confidence in God is grounded in his respect for God’s will and His sovereignty. Also, David’s confidence is not rooted in his morally upright life to date. If it were so, does this mean I will lose my confidence when I make mistakes? I don’t think so, because Christ has died for us, and it is His blood on the cross that has made us righteous, not my own effort.

APPLY:

In my mind, I am certain that God is good, loving, and righteous. But in real times of need, I’m often tentative in my prayers because of my fear of disappointment if He doesn’t answer, and I doubt that I have the gift of prayer. David’s prayer is a reminder to me that I can remain confident and trust that God will hear my prayers because He sees me as righteous through Christ. It is not dependent on my strength, gifts, or abilities.

DO:

I will revitalise my daily prayers with confidence and trust that God hears and desires good and justice as I pray in accordance with His will. This is not because I expect God to give me what I want, but because, like David, I have absolute trust in His character.

PRAY:

Heavenly Father, I believe in Your goodness and righteousness. Help me with my unbelief, and give me the confidence to pray like a child and always be in awe of You. Teach me to pray, and may my prayers continue to build my faith. Amen.
