The God Of The Implausible And Impossible

BRD REFLECTION 2025

Psalm 13 and Luke 1:1-56 (NIV)

(Bob Mok from Small Group Ministry)

READ:

Luke 1:1-56 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

In Luke 1:5-38, the story of the implausible and impossible unfolds. The angel Gabriel told Zechariah that his elderly wife would bear a son (Sarah gave birth to Isaac at the age of 90). Mary was told by Gabriel that she would give birth to Jesus, the Son of God by virgin conception of the Holy Spirit.

APPLY:

How would I react if I were a witness to Gabriel’s announcements? I would be absolutely bewildered. It is implausible and impossible! But that’s God’s nature –
As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:9 NIV).

I have experienced multiple challenges and impossible situations in my life and I can testify that God has never failed me in seeing me through all my challenges and difficult situations. The time I floundered was the time when I doubted or disbelieved God. The lesson I learnt from Luke 1 is to expect the unexpected from God. When I take this stance, I am less likely to falter in my faith. The outcome could either be a happy or an unhappy event. I have to trust God with unhappy events especially. One of my favourite “lean on” scriptures is Philippians 4:13 (NIV): “Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me .”

DO:

  1. I will deepen my faith in the word of God and be expectant of His divine revelation, even of the implausible and impossible.
  2. I will share my faith and encourage others more when they are in need.

PRAY:

Father, Luke 1 is a reminder that You are the God of the implausible and impossible. Forgive me for the times when I had weak faith or have limited Your powers by my limited human understanding and  forgotten Your promises. Increase my faith and trust in Your promises, and that “You will never leave me nor forsake me (Joshua 1:5; Heb 13:5).” Amen.
