Dealing With Difficult Issues

BRD REFLECTIONS:

Acts 15:1-35 and Psalm 22:1-31 (NIV)

(Genevieve Tan from Small Group Ministry)

READ:

Acts 15:1-35 (ESV)

OBSERVE:

Paul and Barnabas had been reaching out to many Gentiles on their mission. In Acts 15, there were disagreements within the church on the requirement of circumcision in order to be saved and we see how the issue was dealt with. These were what stood out to me in the text:

  1. A holistic approach – Peter and James defended the Gentiles with reasoning based on scripture (v7, 16-18), Paul and Barnabas testified about the signs and wonders God had done (v12) and Judas and Silas were to execute the task through the Holy Spirit and words of encouragement (v31-32).
  2. The involvement of the community – the apostles and elders (v6) and the whole church (v22) were gathered to discuss and be involved in the decision and steps moving forward.

APPLY:

The theological issue was dealt with great seriousness and care by the church. Recently, I had to have difficult conversations with fellow believers on our calling as followers of Christ. This text reminds me of how easy it is to adapt the gospel to our liking but also the importance of when to speak up. I can learn from the leaders on their holistic approach to rely on the word, testimonies, gifts, the Holy Spirit and community to navigate these difficult issues and that I can also be the one to step in to give counsel and support. As Christians, we may have our disagreements but we cannot differ from the gospel.

DO:

  1. I will reflect on my understanding of the gospel.
  2. I will pray for wisdom and humility to navigate difficult conversations.
  3. I will look out for those around me who might need prayer and support.

PRAY:

Lord, thank You for Your saving grace and that we always have Your word and Holy Spirit with us. Help us not shy away from difficult issues but have the courage to be obedient to defend Your gospel and remind us that we can rely on You and Your people for guidance and help, Amen.
