Genesis 40:9-15 and Psalm 105:16-22 (NIV)

(Lyn Tan from Worship & Music Ministry)

READ:

Genesis 40:9-15 tells how Joseph interprets the cupbearer’s dream and his request to be mentioned to Pharaoh and released from prison.

Psalm 105:16-22 recounts God’s hand in Joseph’s trials and how he was subsequently redeemed and given the highest position in Egypt, next to the Pharaoh.

OBSERVE:

At the start of Genesis 40, two members of Pharaoh’s staff joined Joseph in prison. After some time, both the baker and the cupbearer had a dream, but there was no one to interpret them.

In verse 8, Joseph said, ‘Do not interpretations belong to God?’; and he proceeded to interpret the cupbearer’s dream.

I was struck, firstly, by Joseph’s confidence in God despite the undesirable situation he was in – being imprisoned indefinitely for something he did not do.

Second, he was still willing to help his cellmates with their problems. I do not think that I would be as generous; most likely, I would be self-absorbed with myown problems instead.

After Joseph interpreted the cupbearer’s dream, he expressed his desire to be released, showing that he was still waiting.

In Psalm 105:16-22, the psalmist uses Joseph’s life to declare God’s divine sovereignty and providence.

Verse 16 states that God “called down famine on the land and destroyed all their supplies of food,” illustrating that God controls natural events to accomplish His purposes; to move Jacob’s family to Egypt, preserving the covenant line and demonstrating that God’s providence extends even over scarcity and hardship.

Joseph’s eventual rise to power shows that God can bring good out of suffering and use human circumstances to fulfill His plans (Psalm 105:20-22).

This passage can bring assurance and comfort to those who might be going through tough circumstances, for we have a sovereign God who always provides.

APPLY:

My takeaways from these passages are:

– To serve faithfully, even in unfair or difficult settings. I know that it is hard to do. But with God’s grace, I can walk through the challenging times.

– To care for those around me with kindness and compassion.

– To hold on during long seasons of waiting; unseen plans are unfolding.

– To remember those who have helped me in my journey, and keep my word.

– To give credit to God for any insight or gift He supplies.

– To remember that God’s sovereignty, wisdom and purposes are ever faithful.

DO:

– Serve faithfully

Like Joseph, I will strive to serve faithfully in whatever situation, trusting that God sees and will reward them in His time.

– Trust in God’s timing

I will remember and take comfort in knowing that God has not forgotten me. His timing is perfect, and He is working all things for my good.

– Seek God’s wisdom

I will learn to seek God’s wisdom and guidance, trusting that He will reveal His plans and purposes in due time.

PRAY:

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for Your faithfulness and compassion that You have shown me. Help me to serve You faithfully where I am, to trust in Your timing for what lies ahead, and to seek Your wisdom and guidance as Your plans are revealed according to Your purpose. I pray in Jesus’ most precious name, Amen.
