Let’s G.A.M.D (Go And Make Disciples)

BRD REFLECTIONS

Matthew 28:16-20 (NIV)

(Lucas Chow, Steward, LCEC)

READ:

Matthew 28:16-20 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

In this last paragraph of the last chapter of the book of Matthew, Jesus gave his disciples The Great Commission – “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”

He also promised them that “surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

APPLY:

What is a disciple?

The Greek translation of “make disciples” is mathēteuō. The word comes from the root mathētēs which means “learner” or “pupil”. It refers to a master/teacher-student relationship.

Christian discipleship is a lifelong learning journey for me to discover what it means to follow and serve our Lord obediently. I can do this through reading of the Scripture, being part of the community of faith and strengthening my fellowship with other Christians.

Making disciples

As a follower of Jesus, The Great Commission is for me as well. I am not to keep the gospel for myself but to share it with others, leading them to Christ and hence multiply His followers.

I recognise that accepting Christ is only the beginning of becoming a disciple. Therefore, I should journey with new believers and help them to be students of Jesus, i.e. to become disciples.

DO:

1. I need to be discipled in order to disciple others. The following will help me:

  • Discipline in reading and reflecting on the Scriptures every day.
  • Faithfully join fellow Christians in worship services.
  • Strengthen my fellowship with other Christians through meeting, sharing, and praying together.

2. To make disciples, I will do the following:

  • Be ready to share my testimony with others, particularly with pre-believers.
  • Participate actively in out-reach programmes.
  • Journey together with fellow disciples.

PRAY:

Dear Lord Jesus,

Thank you for the Great Commission. I have much to learn to be your disciple. Please help me to be disciplined and obedient in following you all the days of my life. Help me to be ever ready to share the good news with others.

In Your name. Amen.
