Replacing, Not Just Resisting

LENT DEVOTIONAL 2026 | DAY 21

Luke 11:1–28 (NIV)

Luke 11:1–28 (NIV)

In Luke 11:24–28, Jesus gives a sobering warning. An unclean spirit leaves a person, but later returns to find the house swept and put in order—yet empty. Because nothing has taken its place, the spirit comes back with others more wicked, and the person ends up worse than before. Jesus then points to the true source of blessing: hearing the Word of God and obeying it.

What stands out to me is that the problem is not simply evil that needs to be removed, but also the emptiness that follows. A clean but unfilled life is still vulnerable. Jesus teaches that freedom from sin requires more than resistance; it requires replacement. The heart and mind must be actively filled with God’s truth and direction.

This passage speaks deeply into my daily struggles. I often fall into the pleasures of the flesh—uncontrolled eating, spending too much time on Netflix or YouTube, and laziness that tempts me to skip morning devotion and swimming. I have realised that I can redirect my thoughts from unhealthy desires to something good, but I am not always determined enough to do so in the moment of temptation.

Prayer has become my first line of help. When tempting thoughts surface, stopping to pray and asking the Holy Spirit for help truly makes a difference. As Scripture reminds me, when I walk by the Spirit, I do not have to gratify the desires of the flesh. Victory does not come from willpower, but from dependence on God.

Yet I have learned that resisting temptation is not enough. If I stop there and leave my mind empty, those same thoughts often return—sometimes stronger and more persistent than before, just as Jesus warned. I need to intentionally replace them.

When my mind drifts toward watching another show, I switch my thoughts to reading a meaningful book or following up on important emails. When I catch myself planning my next large meal even when I am not hungry, I remind myself of my medical condition and that my body is the temple of God. When I dread the cold water in the morning, I redirect my thoughts to the joy of spending time with God in His Word and the refreshment that follows discipline.

This Lent, I will practise replacing, not just resisting. Each time temptation comes, I will intentionally fill my mind with prayer, Scripture, and life-giving thoughts, inviting the Holy Spirit to occupy every space of my heart.

[ Reflection Questions ]

  1. What does the “empty house” in Luke 11:24–26 represent in our spiritual lives today?
  2. What temptations do you find hardest to resist, and what godly practices could replace them?
  3. How can prayer, Scripture, and community help us remain spiritually filled rather than merely self-controlled?
