Call Me, Beep Me, If You Want To Reach Me, Lord

OBSERVE:
The passages today tell us of how Saul responded to God’s call. Saul responds with obedience despite his misgivings – a testament to the type of obedience and faith I yearn to model. His actions following the victory over the Ammonites also remind me to always give thanks and recognise God’s hand and might in all my successes. It was a perfect opportunity to use this success to prove detractors wrong, and yet, instead of doing so, Saul chose to show mercy and redirect the glory accorded to him to God, leading the people to sacrifice offerings of thanks and praise to Him. This posture of thanksgiving and humility echoes the words of the Psalmist. I’m reminded that forgetting God is too an act of wickedness condemned in the Psalm.
APPLY:
“Call me, beep me if you wanna reach me” is a refrain in Disney Channel’s “Kim Possible” song, one of my favourite shows when I was growing up. Kim Possible, a teenage spy, was always quick to respond to calls, day or night, danger or trouble. Can I say the same for myself when God calls me to action?
As I reflect on the passages, I’m reminded of the right posture of response when God calls me to action: to give thanks in all things, to be patient, faithful, obedient, and to always accord all glory to God.
DO:
In a world where practicality and efficiency is king, I must remember that the King I serve is far more concerned about the posture of my heart than the KPIs I can achieve. Whether I face opposition or great success, I must remember who fights with and for me.
I know that the call never ceases – and yet, neither do my interfering human desires – which makes it all the more crucial for me to hold fast to the hope of Christ and continue walking in obedience. More importantly, as the psalmist writes, I must walk with humility and thanksgiving, lest I start to believe that all things are achieved in my own strength.
PRAY:
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for choosing me to partake in Your will. Help me and forgive my unbelief. May Your will become my heart’s desire. Break my heart for what breaks yours and push me to action. Guard my heart from pride and conceit. Remind me that my strength comes from You alone, so that I may always come to you with humility and gratitude. Guide me and protect me from going astray. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
