Chosen And Called
BRD REFLECTION 2026
Ephesians 1 and Psalm 1 (NIV)
(Chan Wai Lup from Local Church Executive Committee)
READ:
Ephesians 1 (NIV)
OBSERVE:
At the beginning of his letter to the Ephesians, Paul gave thanks to God for every spiritual blessing He had given to those who have been chosen in Christ, which includes the adoption to sonship, redemption and the Holy Spirit. Paul went on to pray that God would give the Ephesians the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that they might know Him better, and know the hope to which they have been called.
The Message version of the Bible translates verse 18 as: “I ask the God of our Master, Jesus Christ, the God of glory—to make you intelligent and discerning in knowing Him personally, your eyes focused and clear, so that you can see exactly what it is He is calling you to do, grasp the immensity of this glorious way of life He has for His follower.”
APPLY:
Two words stood out for me in this chapter: “chosen” and “called”. I am reminded to give thanks to God for choosing me to be His child. Had He not first reached out to me, I would still be lost in sin. The Holy Spirit within me is able to help me know God more intimately, but I need to pray and ask for wisdom to understand what He has called me to do.
Throughout the decades I have been a Christian, I have sought God for His calling for me: in my work, my family, and my church ministry. I am reminded that although there are things that God has called me to do, my chief calling is to live a life that reflects my sonship in Him. On a daily basis, this calling shapes how I choose to spend my time, the way I speak to people, and the decisions I make, big or small. My purpose in life is more than what I do, but is also in reflecting who I am: a child of God. While I may never be able to live a totally holy and blameless life, the hope of my calling to a glorious way of life lies in the power of the Holy Spirit and the promise of an eternal inheritance.
DO:
I will give thanks to God each day for choosing me to be His child.
I will seek to know Him more intimately through daily prayer and reflection on His Word.
I will be mindful of how I live each day through reflective pauses and examen.
PRAY:
Heavenly Father, thank You for choosing me to be Your child. May Your Holy Spirit give me strength to live each day in a way that is pleasing to You. May my calling in life be more than what I do, but also who I am, a reflection of my sonship in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
