BRD REFLECTIONS

Acts 2:1-36 and Psalm 83 (NIV)

(Michael Chan, Pastoral Team Member, Missions Ministry)

READ:

Acts 2:1-36 (NIV)

OBSERVE:

Pentecost, the Feast of Weeks, is celebrated 50 days after Passover and Christ’s resurrection, in thanksgiving for the wheat harvest.  Jews from many nations gathered in Jerusalem for this festival.

On the Day of Pentecost, God poured out His Holy Spirit and we saw 3,000 souls harvested into the Kingdom of God.

God pours out the Holy Spirit to empower His Church for the proclamation of the Gospel to every people in every nation and every language under heaven.

Miracle: At Pentecost, we see the miraculous outpouring of the Holy Spirit: “a sound like a violent wind came from heaven” (v2), “tongues of fire” (v3), “all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues” (v4). Signs and wonders are meant to point people to Jesus Christ and the Kingdom of God.

Message: We see a transformed Peter, humble, bold and anointed, rising up and preaching on the resurrected and exalted Christ to people of many nations (Acts 2:14-41).  What an amazing worldwide harvest of souls – the first converts to Christianity!

Mission: “In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people…..And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Acts 2:17-21).  We are to fulfill God’s mission of bringing the Good News of the Gospel by preaching the message of repentance to the least, the last and the lost in the last days, that is the days between Christ’s first and second comings.

APPLY:

I have prayed together with the church “Lord, pour out Your Spirit” on all people and for revival many times. I have been reminded to continue to join with others in this prayer.

May God give me a heart of compassion for the least, the last and the lost.  I desire to be bold like Peter to share the Gospel with power, conviction and love.

Missions is at my doorstep. May my eyes be opened to opportunities to show God’s love and reach out to people God has sent from many nations to Singapore to live, study and work.

I have to be prepared to go to the mission fields and encourage others to fulfil the Great Commission.

DO:

What steps can I take to be involved in the Great Commission?

I can grow by being involved in the disciple-making process to encourage those in the mission field, pray daily for the mission work Wesley is involved in, join the Monthly Missions Prayer Meeting, be equipped for missions, enable others to do missions and empower others to obey the Great Commission.

With the borders of many nations opening up, I look forward to being part of a short-term mission team to bring God’s love to the nations.

PRAY:

Lord, pour out Your Spirit upon all people as promised, just like on the day of Pentecost. Continue to fill and empower me with your Holy Spirit and revive your Church. Give me a heart of compassion for the least, the last and the lost.  Use me to fulfil the Great Commission in Singapore and the ends of the earth.  Grant me boldness and wisdom like Peter to preach the gospel to whoever You will send me to and wherever You will lead me to go to.  In Jesus’ name, I pray.  Amen.
